Okay so no babies have hatched yet.. I believe they are in the process. Very active yet. I candle to see the shadow shifting around. Lol. The veins inside the eggs have begun to shrink. They're almost impossible to see unless you find the right angle but then they're still very hard to see. The eggs look very brittle and spiderwebbed looking. They began to make holes in the eggs 1 week ago now.. the holes are starting to get tad bit bigger. Not sure what I'm expecting. I peak at them everyday. So I notice tiny little holes and such. Still not entirely sure they're hatching. Assuming they are being as they are 66 days today. I did change out the substrate in my boxes for the eggs just in case it was too moist. It wasn't bad. I'll keep everyone posted if they make the great escape. If any ones has any pictures of eggs when they first begin to hatch. Mine are just flaking away and brittle and have pencil lead size holes poked where the little guys back feet are and some where his head is. Yesterday I caught the little one opening and closing his mouth inside of his egg. Never seen that before..

Sometimes you can feel them staring to pip at the egg. If you place your thumb and index gently over the egg you can feel them beginning to pip, sometimes you can even hear it.

I went and tried that out. And I feel them hitting the egg under my thumb. Is that them pipping at the egg? I've been noticing when I touch the eggs they are always hitting it and was wondering what that was.

What species? Some hatchlings stay in the egg for a good while after they pip or make a crack in the egg. It's a lot of work for a little hatchling! It takes time to absorb the yolk, too.

If they're three-striped mud turtles, I'll consult one of my books. I remember reading that they make a long crack in the egg, maybe a couple weeks before they actually hatch.

Just box turtles. It's a rescued nest. She had laid them in the middle of a dirt road. Glad me and my hubby came along to block her from traffic. Must've been soft right there or something. This is my first time hatching turtles myself so I am absolutely clueless as to what to expect lol. The veins inside the eggs are practically impossible to see now so I'm guessing the yolk is being absorbed and is shrinking?

@YvonneP is a good one to ask about box turtle eggs, although we have a number of members experienced with breeding box turtles. (Unfortunately, I am not one of them.)

Thank you for your insight anyways. It's always interesting to hear everybody's thoughts. I am very anxiously waiting for them to hatch.

Went to peak my head in and check for babies. (None yet) but I heard the weirdest sound.. not sure what it was but I heard it numerous times. It sounded kind of like a scratching of some sorts. I instantly thought about what you had told me earlier. Hoping that is what it was.

All of you have commented on my turtle egg posts, here is today's update, I am now confused as heck.. I woke up and like always go to check for babies. So one of my eggs with what I believe is a pip, has now started to dent in, the spot where I believe the pip is is even denting? No changes in humidity or temp.. I just spritzed it in case it is a humidity problem. Will know in a few hours if it pops back out. Or is this normal hatching procedure? I myself have not a clue lol. Anybody with thoughts please feel free to share.

What kind of enclosure do you use for semi aquatic turtles? Not sure whether box turtles land in this group? Would I just make half dry land and then half water for them? Any suggestions? I have a baby snapper and he's all water lol. This is a new one for me for sure

My box turtle literally sits in his water bowl but the only reason I put a water bowl in there is because I’m not sure how to set it up to where it’s half land half water. Hope this helps!!

Hello again, it is 11:23 pm here in Minnesota. I am getting ready for bed; one more peak in the incubator for the night, I notice one of my eggs has started to shed some of its outer layer. Could it be a hatcher? Finally? I am so excited at the mere thought of them hatching.
