Well I definitely don't want her to be miserable, nor cause harm, but we're not going to be back in the area where we got her from any time in the near future. So do you suggest we just release her into another wooded area?

Also, I'm for sure going to have to find a captive-bred boxie, because my girls have grown quite attached to her.

Important to know what shell damage there is and to provide medical diagnosis by a wildlife rehabber or vet. A rehabber will not charge for services. There might also be internal injury as well. Releasing the injured juvenile is maybe not an option at this time. As we head into the fall, these turtles bromate (hibernate) and the injured turtle will not make through the winter.

It doesn’t look serious, but I’m not being there to assess it either. A vet check might actually put even more stress on the animal as well as possible exposing it to captive bred diseases. If anything, I’d recommend a rehabilitation center over an exotic vet. At least they will stay with the rehabber for a while if needed and if not, they’ll release soon.

I know wild turtles can take a whole lot more than we think and I’ve seen one female with only one back leg after a dog bite. She still lives in the wild and I’ve seen her covering a nest one year.

There are several good breeders on here who might have some 2019 or 2018 CB hatchlings left? If you’re serious about wanting one, I can help you find a good breeder.

Arizona Tortoise Compound has both hatchlings and yearlings at insanely low prices and they’re good people! Check them out.

Okay, there are a couple of wildlife rehabilitation centers in my area. I'll give them a call tomorrow.

And I will check out Arizona Tortoise Compound.

Might not be illegal, but the impact could be significant on the wild population in that area. Most adults have a 2-4 acre home range. You are keeping one which might not allow enough overlap of breeding adults, thus hurting the species.
Please return it to the wild.

Oh for Petes sake! Get a life. Box turtles have been one of the best and easiest turtle pets for a long time. Your highlighted area is gross misinformation by some ignorant fool. Don't be so ignorant as to buy into such stupidity.

I would not recommend them at all. here is a link to my own experience with them. please read thru the entire thread, as the seller commented on there also.

Wow, Colleen, I just read through that thread, and I'm so sorry that happened to you!! I can't believe his failure to make things right and take responsibility! How is Ilene doing now? And did he ever send you an actual 3-toed?? SMH!!

So you think it would be okay to keep her? I'm so confused! Some people say keep, some people say put her back. ‍

Get a life? I’m ignorant...?

Well I believe you’re a perfect example of the phrase, “With age doesn’t always come wisdom.”
I suppose you’ve poached plenty of turtles in your 72 years, and you probably don’t know or care about the impact that has on the wild population. It’s old timers like you who we can thank for the lack of wild turtles in general. My kids won’t be able to see all the types of turtles in their natural environment thanks to people like you who find it perfectly okay to take a wild animal home as a pet.
Shameful you don’t appreciate the animals more sr, simply shameful.

Ethical people will tell you to put it back. I’ve given you the reasons for why it should be released back. Read any reputable publication on the topic and they’ll all say don’t keep it. This animal can outlive your kids! You’re condemning it to a life sentence by keeping it, regardless of current attachments to it. Furthermore, the desire to have a “pet turtle” quickly fades and what’s left is an animal that has been stressed, likely housed and fed improperly, and then often times after it has faded it is released back into the wild in a frail and sickly state only to die.

There are certain ignorant self seeking people that will tell you to go ahead and keep it. As for what is best for the turtle, get it back to the wild. Plenty of CB that know nothing else but being captive and adjust much much better to being placed in an enclosure.

That is horrible! Sad and very unfortunate, but it seems to be the exception, not the rule for ATC. I know buyers and breeders both who have had nothing but good experiences with them. I don’t work for or personally know any of them, but their reputation is top notch.

Just dropped her off at the wildlife rescue...THANK YOU everyone who said to take her to get checked out...turns out her shell was cracked!! They will fix her up and get her back to where she belongs.

Now to find a baby/juvenile CBB...preferably a 3-toed!!! Anyone who can point me in the right direction, I appreciate it! I can't seem to find any available.

Ilene actaully passed away, the vet thinks she had an ongoing infection from the entire incident. She did live about a year after her surgery, but Then she passed. The seller did not ever send me anything else, and he never paid the vet bills. i had to do that.

The point is, i used them bc of their good reviews, and i got screwed big time. i would hate for anyone else to go thru that. So i posted my story to prevent anyone else from going thru that. Not the correct type of box turtle, and i had to pay all the vet bills. So i don't care that the majority had a good experience. NOT all of us did. IDK how you can say TOP NOTCH when i just showed why they are not. I was stuck with a turtle i had to take care of, and i was given a vet bill of $500. The seller was Totally in the wrong, yet refused to make it right.

Oh my, I'm so sorry!!! What an absolutely terrible experience to have to go through! I got attached to this girl in a week and am already missing her after dropping her off, so I can only imagine your grief after going through all of that! I realize it's been a couple years, but still, how awful! So sorry you had to go through that.
