I don't believe Yvonne saw the wound and thought you meant his "bellybutton". I think you're right a bird or something probably got hold of him and wounded his side and his intestines or something is showing. I'm not sure what to do in this situation I asked my husband and he also isn't sure. He said try to push it in if there's no resistance or pain and if you can cover it so it stays concealed enough to heal? not sure what a vet would do, I'm not one. I want desperately to help the little guy. He reminds me of my current turtle Elvis who is a yearling snapper. He's certainly a tough little guy.

Aw geeze. I thought that was your thumb. Just disregard my previous reply. I was not seeing the wound. That needs to be sterilized and gently pushed back inside. A vet will then stitch it back up. He'll also need antibiotics

I've contacted Arrowhead Reptile Rescue here in Cincinnati and left a VM with them They specialize in wild injured turtles. This is way beyond anything I've treated before, plus it's illegal to self-treat wild turtles in Ohio. I just found that out. Lol

Gives me better hope they can do something with the snapper!
They can and they will, he will do great just because you helped him. My little Elvis was on the brink of death when I got him.. he was mistreated and not fed. He was family hatched and just given to the wrong person and I took him. He could swim straight he would flip over and wouldn't eat. I couldn't get him to eat for months after I took him. He was the size of a hatchling still at a half a year.. I thought he was a gonner.. every day I tried to feed him and help him stardy himself. Finally one day after months of nothing he ate. I cried.. and now he is growing and doing great. Not sure what was wrong with him when I got him but he has came along way and that little guy you rescued will as well. Snappers are very Hardy turtles.. he will do great and he will thrive.
