I'm about to put a new enclosure together for one of my Redfoots. I was wondering does a CHE have to be mounted vertically? Or can it be mounted facing horizontally? I was thinking of mounting it facing sideways at the top of the enclosure so that the direct heat is not facing down towards the tortoise. This is a Redfoot so I don't need a basking area. I plan on setting it on a thermostat so that the whole enclosure stays close to the same temp. Has anyone ever done this?

I see no reason why this would not work. You may need a small fan to push the heat down to ground level, but it is not like a UVB source that needs to be pointed directly down. Make sure your probe for the thermostat is at ground level.

It is possible to make it work that way. As mentioned above a small fan to help circulate the heat or if you can have some kind of metal that is bent do when it does it the metal it can directed it downward. If place being heated is pretty well insulated I beleive it would work well sideways

Thanks for the feedback. It's a 75g tank that's going to have an acrylic lid. I think the fan is a great idea. I'll probably mount a small fan next to the CHE to circulate the heat better.
