My 3 year old Hermann's tortoise has started doing this strange thing where he carries his wooden stick bridge on his back.please see the photos attached.

Its pretty normal from them to drag things around.

Your tortoise would be much better off on a substrate that isn't so dry.

Thank you for your reply. I previously had him on Aspen bedding, and then Hemp bedding. I also tried topsoil but I just found it got so messy. Can I ask for your suggestion on what substrate to use?
Thank you

Aspen and hemp are too dry. Topsoil is no good because you can't know what composted yard waste it is made of, and its very messy, as you've already seen.

Coco coir works best for babies, and once they reach about 3-4 inches, I switch them to fine grade orchid bark. Both of these can be kept damp which will give your tortoise some much needed moderate humidity.

Hi Tom,
I too have a Hermann that currently has herbifloor substrate. I do mist it every few days, but am interested in the fine grade orchid bark you suggest. Is one brand better than another?

I buy mine in bulk from local garden centers. A huge 2.0 cu. ft. bag costs less than a small bag from the pet store.

Thanks Tom, I'll make enquiries at my local garden centre.
