I was wondering if any research has been done on hybrid tortoises. Specifically sulcata leopard hybrids. Does anyone on this form own this hybrid. Is this hybrid sterile. Does breeding these two species together cause any health issues. Are the hatch rates low. Any information helps and if you have research can you please link it. Also I keep reading to not mix species in enclosures but If they have the same care and environment what is the most common issue and why is it so discouraged. TYIA

We do our best to discourage any hybridizing. Species should never be mixed for a variety of reasons.
Yes I already realized that while trying to find information on hybrid tortoises. Although I still haven’t been able to read any actual information on hybrids.

Even simply breeding same species animals to get a certain trait is blurring the lines.
More color, more size, etc. Eventually species will look nothing like they did several generations ago. And this is happening now.
Let's not forget that the ancestors of my Chihuahua were Wolves.

I’ve never heard of hybridization for tortoises before. I would assume, based on the natural laws of biology, that hybridization among two species would be really difficult in terms of both breeding and care. I’m not really a biologist or anything myself, but if I were you i would do extensive research on hybrids in general (beyond tortoises) to see if risks like health issues and other complications are a possibility when breeding separate species together. Other than that, I wouldn’t recommend ever crossbreeding two species of tortoise, there can be too many risks.

Lmao I can barely keep my hatchlings alive let alone breed tortoises, I was only asking because I saw some for sale and they looked cool. I breed some of my animals but definitely not tortoises, I was just wondering and there is like no information on this hybrid. Not even any really on here, probably because everyone here hates hybrid tortoises so much. Honestly the only people I know who hates hybrids just as much are people who keep dart frogs...
