Does anyone know about this type of auto insurance? I'm a senior citizen and only drive my truck once a week for a bit less than a 10 mile round trip. It usually takes a couple years to reach the 3000 miles for an oil change. What are the pitfalls or advantages to my switching over to this type of insurance?

You could try one of the plug in options like progressive has that gives you a very detailed record of your driving. THis should help lower your costs. THe biggest issue is if the car is damaged while parked on your property. Does your home-owners cover it? Some policies specifically do not and you must be clear on that in case something happens. I am currently happy with my rates since I have two Subarus, and do not want the plug in as I do occasionally engage in sprited driving!

There is a company that operates in California called Metromile Insurance. They offer both pay as you go and traditional insurance. Maybe requesting and comparing quotes of both types can help you decide. Your mileage is tracked by a device plugged into your OBD2 port so if your truck is older (pre-1996) you may not be eligible.

Thank you. I've been with Triple A for about 40 years and have had to squeeze down to the barest minimum to satisfy California's requirement. It's getting harder and harder to come up with that annual payment. I think I'll see what Flo has to offer.

Lol I would be in the poor house, if I paid by mile.

TRIPLE AAA can go suck a lemon! I dont care what they have to offer. Years ago in ohio winter of 1993 we had a week where the high was 0 degrees! I went to start my car to leave work and NO. So I call AAA-my grandpa had been a member for years. They said, "Sorry sir, we are not taking any calls for service for that area any more. We have handled the maximum allowable" so I said what about me now- sorry! The next day AAA was canceled! Plus insurance has a tow/assist option for reimbursement. I already had to call the tow company myself so

I love the term you used, spirited driving. I am going to steal that. Same reason I wont do the plug in, as I do the spirited driving daily lol.

You will get best prices switching companies every 2-3 years usually.
I have progressive and so far have had great service. I don't do the plug and drive though.

The plug in drive I think is banned or not allowed in CA.. I did have progressive though and it was one of the cheaper ways to go

It's not actually pay by the mile.
But now that I've retired, State Farm has knocked off a lot of my costs for the same coverages on my vehicles since I've tetired.
Due to my not driving much.
