I have my tortoises in two new 8' x 4' outdoor enclosures. I just went out to check on them and found my Russian tortoise, Buddy, in this precarious situation. On the lower end of the enclosure, where he is in the picture, the cap block is about 10 inches high with the wood on top. I know Russians are good climbers but I still wonder how he got a foothold on the blocks. I know I need to add something so there will no longer be a ledge but does anyone have suggestions of what to use to prevent him from scaling the blocks and toppling over backwards?

I think we’d need to see more pics of the whole enclosure to see if he used anything to get up there. He can use the corners to shimmy up.

Holy crap you have a ninja. How on earth did he do that? Have tortoises invented some plunger gloves without us knowing? Lol

He's probably getting the traction to climb up in the corner. If you cut a small triangle board and cap the corner it might stop him from being able to climb up.

Here are few pictures. I found him on the ledge of the bottom left corner of the picture. My husband thinks he may have used the ceramic hide in the bottom right corner to climb up on the ledge but I think it is a little too slippery. We used less blocks as the elevation goes up toward the cold frame. The second is of both enclosures and the cold frame. The third picture is the inside of the cold frame.

He can definitely get up there by way of that hide. Move it far away from the corner and side. But he can still get up in the corners. They are such good climbers.
