Hello Ryanlocsin22! Welcome to the Tortoise Forum. What kind of tortoise do you have? We truly want to help you but tortoises have a range of species that need different living conditions. However I must say it is good for tortoise to be able to go into their water dish to soak, so they need to get full access to their water dish and sit in it. There are ways to keep the dirt or moss way by putting the water tray on some rocks or the tile.
Please give us more information please. Also size the living set up and pictures please.

LOL, No!o_O Do you know what size your leopard will be?What happens if he gets stuck in the wire part?☠ That would cause more problems than a dirty water dish. Believe me, tortoises have survived from dirty 1 day old water... ?You just need to be safe with items you put in the enclosure that can trap them or they can hurt themselves with.?

You must always change out the water dish every day. So it's not a big deal if it gets a little dirty.

It would be very nice to keep substrate out of the water dish. But there are much better ways to do that. like putting tile or rocks around the water dish area to knock off the substrate. Go into the enclosure forum and ask them the question on how to keep the water dish clean.

Just saying because I am a mom, and when things are too clean, means your tortoise is not moving around too much. You want a happy active tortoise... so you may have to clean out his water dish 2x a day!?

I've seen a few keepers that use these. If you soak your tort daily I don't see an issue with it.

Most tortoises appreciate being able to sit in the water, so I wouldn't use that dish, but if you think it works for your tortoise, go for it.

ok ill forego this kind of waterdish. have trouble finding a terracottta saucer here cos all they sell are plastic ones. though about using a small shallow plate with sloping sides. though i think it would be slippery for them. they do need traction for their water dishes right?

I saw a keeper in my area use a new paint tray. (The paint tray is the kind like if you are painting a wall with a roller * see below * - there's a reservoir at one end so you can make water as shallow or deep as the Tortoise needs, and comes with the built-in ramp. This is a picture of a metal one, but the one these guys had was made of plastic.) They dug a hole in their substrate that exactly fit under the tray so that the ramp came out onto the substrate in their enclosure but the reservoir part was down into it, level, sitting lower than the ramp. It won't fit a large Tortoise, but anyone up to about 8-10 inches / 20-25 cm could sit in it.

I thought it was cool. Does anyone more experienced than me know of a reason not to use one of these?
