Hey guys I can’t decide between getting a red footed tortoise or a yellow footed tortoise. So I was wondering if anyone could give me the pros and cons of each one and which one you prefer. Another question I have is I’ve read that red footed are more sociable than yellow footed and I was just curious if anyone who’s owned both can confirm that statement.

Hello,

We have some threads on this - not necessarily pro's and con's but general info and differences:

I prefer redfoots because of the size difference. I would probably need a larger enclosure for a yellowfoot and I can't really afford the space.

I have no idea if this is true, but I have read that yellowfoot require precise husbandry, and are not recommended as a first tortoise.

Of course, almost everything you read on the internet re' tortoises is wrong. :)

Here
I just relinquished ownership of a yellowfoot after 2 years. I've had several before, but this tort was the most shy of any I've had. It just plain wanted to hide 24/7, whether inside or outside. On evenings when the temps would fall and I needed to bring it inside, it might take 10 minutes to find it - and this was in a 10 foot by 10 foot pen. Redfoots as a rule are much more outgoing...and perhaps easier to find at twilight.

Redfoots have amazing personalities (I am biased).

Does anyone have a yellowfoot and redfoot? I just wonder if they get along, as they are both the same kind just different coloring?
I've had both in separate pens in my yard.
I housed them. Fed them and cared for them the same way.
All of my tortoises live outdoors

They are totally different species from each other, not just different colored animals of the same species.

Besides being colored differently Yellow-foot adults can also get much larger than Red-foot adults.
