Hello everybody!

Not new to this website or tortoises, but this is my first post here. I am on the hunt for a leopardcata or a PP leopard. I've owned a PB leopard for the past couple of years and after moving to AZ from MN, I am eager to turn my backyard into a tortoise haven. Please reach out if anyone knows where I can find such a beauty!

Cheers!

@Tom may have some PP leopards for sale, but I don't think any of our members have the sulcata/leopard cross.

Got it. I did reach out to Tom the other day regarding some PPs and it looks like all these current PP babies are spoken for. I'm hoping that another clutch will make its way into the market soon! Have had no luck in regards to my other methods of finding one (i.e. other sites, word of mouth, personal contacts, etc). Hopefully here, I can! Thanks for the fast reply!

There is an ad for a large female "Leopcata" currently running on the Fauna Classifieds:

Nick, the seller on the Fauna ad, is a member here, but I don't remember his username.

I just remembered - it's Baoh, but he hasn't been here since 2019

When species are mixed, different diseases get spread from one type of animal from one part of the world to another species from a different part of the word that did not evolve for millions of years to deal with that pathogen. Add in the stress of tight confines in captivity, and add in the very different personalities of these two species, and you have a bad combination of factors. It can, and does, wipe out entire collections, and it can also begin the spread of new and terrible diseases within the hobby. Do a search for yellow spot disease here on the forum to see what I mean. Don't know where this one came from originally, but one guy breeding in AZ has spread it all over the entire country now. Austwikia chelonae. It is devastating and highly contagious.

Buying hybrids only encourages this practice. We should all be discouraging this practice. The original species are both great tortoises and there is no good reason to mix them. There are many more ethical reasons to not mix them, but the disease issue is usually the most relatable.

Please don't buy or encourage hybrids.

Oh I see, I am new to the world of hybrids so had no idea about the dangers of cross-breeding. Thank you for educating me and so sorry for not knowing! I am glad you brought this up.

Why a leopcata and not a sulcata? This way your not encouraging cross breeding.
I originally thought the mix would be a cool and fun combo to care for and I like how unique they are. However, after that comment from @Tom, I know now that crossbreeding is a no no so will just be seeking a nice PP instead. I never thought combing the breeds would be so dangerous but the diseases but know i know. Great information from you all I did not previously know! Thank you!

I just read an article last week about China & U.S. scientists developing a monkey-human embryo for the purpose of developing organs that could be transplanted into humans. I could hardly keep from throwing up.

Just because we can doesn't mean we should. I feel the same way about torts & "hybrids."
