Hi,
I'm working on an outdoor enclosure for my 2 red foot tortoises (approximately 5 years old).
I live in Florida and I see that alot of enclosures are just exposed. I was planning on using hardware cloth for the whole area since most of you seem to recommend it.
Should I just cover a portion where I will place them at night and keep them in the open area during the day? It would look alot nicer but safety is my priority. please advise if leaving them exposed during the day wouldn't really be a threat.

You don't really need a cover but you should build a night box that the tortoises can be locked in each night for protection.

I agree they need a night box for night time to keep them safe. Also plants and bushes they can get shade from and hide under.
Btw, you do know that tortoises should not be kept in pairs right? If they are two females they will probably be fine as redfoot are one of the least aggressive. However two males or male and female should not be housed together.

Mine comes in at night because I'm a spaz so my night box is really just her large hide during the day when it's hot out but we keep it open. I used a 12x10 dog kennel staked into the ground and covered the bottom one foot in deer cloth so she can't climb and see out. I do not use a cover because they collect water and we get too much rain. If I was going to keep her out at night I would opt to lock her box because of rats, outdoor cats, and birds but I like she gets sunlight during the day when she ventures out.

I use HOME DEPOT composting bins as night boxes here in Broward county.
I just have a single 50 watt CHE dangling set on a timer.
Works fantastically
