We are having problems with rats in our loft space which is on the same floor as my tortoise room. My question is are the rats coming in after the torts. I'm sure I don't need to tell you how worried we are any advice would be appreciated.

Many tortoises have been chewed up by rats. It happens when the tortoise is cold and slumbering at night and they just don't fight back or run.

Trap and kill those rats with a passion. Block their entrance after you've caught them all. Use multiple different traps and baits for maximum effectiveness. Don't use poisons or you'll kill all the local predators that eat rats.

Thank you all for your help. Today we have had the pest control out for the second time in eight months, he can not see a point of entry. Will take all the advice given to help keep are torts safe. All tortoise are locked away at night, I'm also checking around for any damage to night boxes.

Rats are acrobats. Do not forget to look UP for ways they get in. Cable wires, electrical wires or any overhanging trees that are attached to or touching the tort area are all great access points for them. Good luck!
