Heya, I am going to get a male southern painted turtle, I have done a ton of research for a 20 gallon setup,

but will a 40 gallon breeder tank with an above tank basking area sufficient for it fully grown? Thanks in advance

I waited to see if any of the REAL talent would comment..............

Many folks will never see a space large enough so don't get your feelings hurt is folks tell you to get a bigger tank.

.....but I kept water turtles in 50gallon tanks for many decades....usually 3-5 per tank.............so I think you'll be fine as far as him being able to live a healthy life.

40 gallons is pretty small for an adult. A full grown S Painted is one of the smaller turtles and it could live there, but I don't feel it would do well in a 40 gal. I would go 55 gal or better yet - a 75 gal. The 75 gal is the same wall space as a 55 gal (48"x20") but it is 18" wide instead of the 12" of a 55 gal. So 50% more area.
