Good morning my dear friend Zola,
Thank you for your kind message. I am so glad you have had enjoyable walks with your Papa.
I have had some delightful attention from children this week as it is the end of the holiday and they have been coming to play while their parents are shopping.
Much splashing of my shell in my bath and well meaning snacks offered under my beak.
My retainer was surprised to find that some crafty rodent had stolen quite half of my sacred supply of soggies. A hole had been chewed in the bag out of sight, and the creature had made off with the swag.
I had to do without them until fresh supplies arrived. I hear owls calling at night very close, so I hope they swoop down and catch these super rodents.
My entourage are all well, thank you and I trust that your Papa and Mama are sustained and in good health.
I have been camping out for a few nights recently under a favourite shrub.
Here is a picture of me emerging from my wild boudoir.
With fondest regards and best wishes from your friend Teztez xxx20220829_083102.jpg

If you have rats about, be careful of leaving him out at night - there's many a tort lost limbs to rats if left out in the summer or even during hibernation if they are left to their own devices in the garden.:(

Dear and most noble Lady - how delightful to see your charming face looking out from your boudoir - however, the mention of rats is indeed worrying, and although I always try to surround you with good wishes at night, I am afraid that they will not protect you from rats.
It has been very damp and windy today, so I haven't been for a walk by the sea. I kept my mama company a lot of the time, which was pleasant for both of us
I am very glad to hear that your entourage is well - does that mean that your trainee retainer is safey out of hospital, then?
I shall keep the memory of your sweet face in my mind as I wish you goodnight when I am tucked up in my box.
With deep and respectful regards, as always, I remain your friend and admirer

Good morning my very kind friend,
That was so nice that you kept your Mama company.
You must be a great comfort to her.
Thank you for your kind thoughts for our wellbeing. I am happy to say that Martin is home from hospital and is much better, the IV drip and tablets are healing him up and controlling his poorly inside and he is feeling much stronger and has started doing his work outs and going for runs again. He also has the energy to work on his house and its large unruly garden. I would love to explore this but have never been allowed to yet.

Thank you for your concern about my being nibbled by rats. My retainer has taken this very much to heart and I was firmly placed in my hut last evening. I do love living wild in the garden but it would be most dreadful to have no legs and be eaten by rats. I will co operate. Thank you for your kind thoughts. They are much appreciated and in return I think of you tucked up in your special box.
I hope you have a peaceful day.
Much love from Teztez and Ruth xxx

Dear Lyn,
Thank you for your kind concern for my welfare, I really appreciate it.
I will submit to being put to bed in my hut and shut in safely each night until it's time to hibernate. I really just want to dig into a tunnel under the bushes and hide quietly but I do see that this would be no defence against vicious rats. It is true that there are some about and we have to be sensible.
Thank you again.
Kind regards from Lady Teztez xx

Good morning Dear Zola the Magnificent
How are you getting on? We hope you are well and that dear Angie and Richard are well.
Teztez has been very well but is beginning to think about her long sleep. She is not very interested in eating and wants to hide herself away under the shrubs and in the long grass.
She still parks herself beside our feet to have her shell scratched and stroked.
She has been wondering if you have been playing a part behind the scenes recently, she is convinced that you are involved in some way, perhaps guarding the Crown or acting as an envoy to visiting dignitaries.
We always think about you, lovely Zola xxx

Dear Ruth - I am addressing this to you, as I think it's possible that the lovely Lady Teztez is now hibernating. I have had a rather mixed time for a while - of course she was correct in her suspicion that I assisted in the ceremony you mention - not publicly ,of course, but mainly making some of the shyer and more anxious guests feel more at ease - it was stressful work, not made any easier by those corgis bouncing around. But I think I helped , all the same.
Then my mama had, and is still having, particularly bad headaches, and was very wobbly for a long time. She is quite a bit better now, and is going to Tavistock on Tuesday for some more injections in her head,
which may help.I hadn't forgotten the dear and treasured Lady, however, and say goodnight to her, with my mama, every night.
I hope you are all well, and that your son has fully recovered. My Papa has just found a photo of me, a couple of years ago, meeting a new friend. I hope you like it.
With much love to you, dear Ruth, and my respectful regards to the wonderful Lady Teztez.

Dear and respected Zola,
We have been thinking about you a lot, we were anxious about Angie and very sorry to hear that her headaches have been troublesome. Teztez is delighted that you are thinking of her; she is a bit undecided at the moment, some days she wants to remain in her boudoir hut, other days she enjoys her bath and partakes enthusiastically in her soggies. We are taking a day at a time. She is very touched that you send her goodnight wishes, she returns these and loves to imagine you in your cosy fleece lined crate. Her hut is covered in a sort of quilt to insulate her from annoying draughts .
We send sincere and heartfelt best wishes to you all, we are enduring a nightmare time at the moment, hardly can bear to look at the news of the government, the beastly attacks by the media are too bad. I suppose they would be happy if we had no government at all, just a dictator state. Teztez knows how comforting her serene presence is during these upsetting times. She has her shell stroked and scratched a lot as it comforts her entourage to relax with her unflurried calm.
I hope you get some more sunny walks in before the frosts come.
With fond regards and love from lady Teztez and Ruth xxx

Dear guardian of the treasured Teztez - Zola has been wondering if the Lady is still awake, and if so, would she like to hop on his broomstick with him to go to a Halloween party ! I told him it was unlikely, but he insisted I asked you.
If she is awake still, I hope she is well and still enjoying her strokes - like you, I find the presence of a tortoise very comforting - especially when I am sitting by the fire, with my chin tucked into his shoulder !
Love to you all from Angie - and Zola, of course xxx

Dearest Zola!! So that's what Teztez was up to! She was so naughty this evening, she had been put inside her hut to keep warm and dry and when we went to shut her in she had disappeared and made her way down the garden and was sitting waiting for you in the dark under her favourite bush!
She is a One...
She is in a bit of a funny mood at the moment. It's so mild and almost balmy that she doesn't know what to do about hibernating. She wanders distractedly about in the garden, insisting on going outside. She doesn't want to eat and I'm worried that she will lose weight and not be heavy enough for her long sleep. I give her a bath every day and she sometimes produces some urates.
But she's quite cross really and rushes about all over the garden.
Perhaps now Halloween is over she will settle down. I will show her your fabulous picture and this will definitely cheer her up.
I hope you get safely back from your exciting party and enjoy your peaceful cuddles beside the fire.
Teztez still likes having her shell scratched and stroked and sits beside my feet looking around. But she doesn't want to sit on my lap and restlessly turns round and round until I put her down.
Much love to you all from Ruth and the headstrong, rebellious but enchanting Lady Teztez xxx

Dear Ruth - I think Zola is asleep now, after having a stroke and cuddle by the fire. We have had some very windy and cold weather recently, despite what the forecasters say, and he can get quite chilled in his conservatory - though he has a heated hide (his garage, we call it) and he has his light and heat lamp in his basking area. His room is almost totally taken over by the 3 tomato plants, which reach to the ceiling and bush right out across one wall. They only started ripening recently, and have lots of green ones and flowers still. They are very small tomatoes, but very nice, and we will probably have our best crop by Christmas. Luckily, Zola isn't interested in the bits of leaf which fall off when we venture into the jungle to reach a tiny but tasty-looking fruit.
The houses next door are finished and sold, so we are getting more birds back now the builders have gone, and there is a cheerful robin who sits outside Zola's room to sing to him.
Is the Lovely Lady winding down to hibernation yet ? Zola and I often think of her, and of course say goodnight to her every night
Love to you all from Angie and Zola xxx

Dearest Zola and Angie,

Thank you for your kind thoughts. I appreciate them very much.
this autumn is so mild and blustery i have quite given up my plans to retire for a long rest and am keeping my entourage on their toes by leaving my warm hut and inspecting the rather untidy garden each day. The beans have finished at last; they were very good apparently although i did not sample any.
i am very impressed by your tomato plants. My retainer tells me that they have a lovely smell and it makes her mouth water to think of crisp, sweet, tiny tomatoes waiting to be picked.
i am glad you have your warm garage. i am sure it must be lovely.
i have begun eating again as there seemed no point is fasting, the weather being mild like it is. i enjoyed some succulent lamb's lettuce yesterday as a hors d'oeuvre before a few warm soggies proffered from my retainer's loyal fingers.
perhaps i had better stay awake like you and keep an eye on my entourage for the moment. The biggest silver birch is dropping leaves copiously all over the grass and this is an admirable camouflage as i make my way up the greenhouse steps and proceed to the clumps of long grass around the apple tree where i like to tunnel in and craftily conceal my shell.
I hope you have an enjoyable weekend and are able to still get out and around with your intrepid Papa.
My retainer is rather worried and annoyed as the woodburner flue has suddenly started exuding large flakes of soot, so my Papa has to jolly well bring home his big works vacuum and give the chimney a good hoovering out. I'm so glad i live outside and don't have all these housewifely problems. i shall remain in my shell fastness until all is well again.
Thinking of you allxxx

Dear and most remarkable Lady Teztez - I told you about my tomato plants some time ago - finally I have got my papa to take a photo of them - yes, as your retainer says, they have a lovely smell - but this is the the largest quantity we have seen so far.
You will observe the tinsel and fairy lights being strangled in the foliage.
Your faithful admirer

Dear Ruth - I don't know if the Lady Teztez is interested in politics, but I brewed up this stew last Halloween, and added a few more tasty delights this year for Halloween - and look, my some of my predictions have already come to pass!!

Good afternoon dearest Zola,
Teztez has been wondering how you are getting on and thinking about you in your lovely conservatory surrounded by your amazing tomato plants and seasonal decorations and twinkling lights.
How is your beautiful golden shell?
Teztez is winding down at last for her long sleep. She has almost stopped eating and seems to want to be in a cold environment, determinedly climbing up the stone steps of her greenhouse and walking off down the garden to her preferred clumps of long grass. She has a heating lamp in her hut, but she doesn't stay under it for long, wanting to be outside even in the rain and mist!
She is in a warm bath as we speak, relaxing and almost asleep in the warm water. Her plastic bowl is on the warm surface beside the aga top and she can feel the warmth through her plastron i think, as she has sprawled her legs and head out in a blissful manner.
We have had some very misty cold days. i hope you and your dear Mama and Papa are keeping warm and well.
much love and fondest wishes from Lady Teztez and Ruth.

Dearest Zola! I am sure you will understand!
My well meaning but utterly dunder-headed entourage have had the temerity and cheek to presume to clean out and change the sacred bedding in my personal hut.
I am absolutely seething.
My comfortable, nicely weathered orchid bark was swept away and some new raw fir bark so called substrate was piled into my hut in its place. Also, to add insult to injury, my soft cloths were removed and some alien hay was introduced as so called bedding.
I walked up my ramp and gazed around in shocked surprise that this could happen to me, then I turned round and hurtled down my ramp to demand the meaning of this outrage.
I flatly refuse to have anything to do with my hut in this new guise of dreadful interior arrangements, and have done my best to hurl the offending contents out with much scraping and churning around.
I camped out beside the familiar aga with my head under a towel to signify my displeasure.
I am sure you would never stand for your sacred crate being altered in any way.
However I have got my way and my retainer has removed the alien contents and replaced my old bedding with much huffing and tutting and sarcastic remarks about "fussy old fanny" she may think I didn't hear, but I did.
I've got my comfortable old cloths back as well.
Let that be a lesson to them.
I have now retired with dignity intact to my own private boudoir and I don't want to hear any more about it.
With fondest regards and love from Lady Teztez to One who Understands.

20221214_125649.jpg20221214_125633.jpg20221214_125607.jpgam winding down for my winter sleep, felt energetic after my tepid bath so my retainer showed me the snow just to convince me that it is time to retire gracefully to my hut..
I tasted a little bit of ice, but turned back to be carried back indoors. I am not eating anything and my hut is at 11 degrees for the moment.
Will keep you posted, I will miss you, my dear friend Zola xxx

Dear Zola, my retainer has been carefully ascertaining that I am the correct weight to be allowed to begin my winter night.
I am 1513g and my shell stem to stern measures 19 cm straight measurement.
So my Jackson ratio is showing 0.22
Apparently this is fairly ok for my long cold adventure in the fridge.
I hope you are keeping well and warm, and will think of you enjoying your special Brussels sprout! Bon appetit mon ami.
Au revoir...
