I use under tank heaters and I really like them. Not sure if you can use them outside or not, but I doubt it b/c the one you mentioned isn't heavy duty. The other thing we need to consider here is that your idea of cold and my idea of cold are probably VERY different! Cold here means single digit temps!

haha... cold here is below 55! Recently ive been putting my torti in a drawer with a blanket.. just for night time. our temps here dont usually go below 30 in the bitter florida winter ;) my sullys are about 9" so they arent too big to bring in at night.. i just want to provide something more comfy for them

Here is an example of how cold it has been here... and it's only FALL... My Sullies are obviously indoors. At night I run a CHE & 2 under tank heaters. That usually keeps the temps around 80 @ night. Before I got my glass lid I was running a CHE, MVB, & the 2 under tank heaters just to keep temps at a steady 95 on the hot side of the enclosure and that's during the day! I'm SO looking forward to relocating to Florida!

I can't remember what size they suggest your tortoise be, but there are the Kane (for a brand example) pig blanket, which is really a heavy duty heat mat.

I don't even think about cold untill we hit 40 degrees or less.....During the day they have ample opportunity to warm up - Even on a 50 degree night, outside temps still hit high 70's or low 80's, allowing the Tortoises to get back up to operating temperature for the majority of the day.........

Yes, it seems a lot of Sulcata owners use the Kane mats or Standfield mats.
You could do a search for either one. Sometimes a CHE or other heat from above too (maybe not in Florida).
You do use a thermostat with them, I have also seen comments that the cheapest thermostat is not very reliable, go with the slightly more expensive one. You could search this topic too.

Get a "pig blanket"...a heating pad made for livestock, thus perfect for outdoor use. A bit pricey, but they last forever, as does a healthy tortoise, so it evens out, actually.

As Franklin and Tara are sulcatas, bite the bullet and get one of the big ones...it'll pay for itself.

If you have a small house for him,air temperature can be maintained with a thermostatically controlled oil filled radiator.

How would you use the pig blanket. Do you place it under the cage or is a leopard tortoise able to sleep on it. My leopard tort is 8 years old and we live in Kansas. I would love to get one so he stays extra warm. I don't know much about those kind of heating mats so any info would be greatly appreciated.
