Is there any clues to a Yellow Foot's age? My tort is just shy of 11 inches. I think she is a female per the flat bottom. ?

I thought it was one year per inch? Is this incorrect?

Hi Vishnu:

Won't you take a few moments to start a new thread in the "Introductions" section and tell us a bit about yourself?

No, you really can't go by how many inches. Different tortoises grow at different rates.

Thanks Yvonne, I like to be educated. I was once told one year per inch. I am glad to know this really isn't the case and not mislead people. I wish we all knew the exact history of our tortoise and what their life was like before their lives with us.

Looks like a female. I have one that is roughly that size and bought her as a hatchling. She is about 8 years old.

Thank you for the response Matt! Will they lay eggs without being bred? Any special tips about Yellow Foots that might differ from Reds?

Yellow-foots are very sensitive tortoises. They are generally shy in nature and tend to stress easily. Wild caught individuals seem to be extra sensitive and I always advise against purchasing one from the wild since they die easily. Yes, like bobbymoore said, they can lay infertile eggs.

Thanks. I have read they are generally shy. I purchased mine from S and S Exotics in Houston. I am surprised that she seems to recognize me and will come to me and even eat from my hand even though some have advised not to. When I first built her outdoor pen with her hideaway she stayed in there most of the time until she got hungry which seemed to be a routine time everyday. I finally grew some plants and vines in the pen and she came out, staying out more often. I supposre I'm lucky for her boldness or perhaps she was well taken care of. Are there any particulars to her diet compared to the Red Foot? I also grew Sweet Potato Vines in her pen fpor coverage. It grows fast. I'm not sure it's safe. I read Sweet Potato vines were safe but I'm not sure if there is a difference between the ones you eat and the ornamental garden ones like I purchased. Thanks for any input. Mel
