It can happen; different bloodlines over time can develop unique coloration. Henne the hypo's, albino's, black redfoots, etc. Do you have a pic?

'Red-footed' has always been a bit of a misnomer- they range from pale yellow through tangerine to red to dark brick red. Color alone is not a great indicator of what race or group it is.

They come from a limited range in Colombia..........Quite a few are brought in every year, and most are distributed through Petco.......I'm able to snag the majority before they get shipped to the Petco distributors, but every now and then I'm a day late so they get shipped off.......

From what I can gather from shaky translations is that they are a fairly land locked population, and all that are collected from that locality are Yellow.......These animals have been coming in for years though, ever since Colombia has Exported Redfoots........I can say that I have never seen this type of "Yellow" come out of Guyana shield animals.......

Here is an old one, that most likely comes from Columbia, and came to Sweden many years ago. The guess is that it's a male, but I'm not really sure. I've only had it for a couple of years myself, and it lives together with the rest of my Cherryhead herd. And I know that Matt (matt41gb) on this forum has a female adult too !

When Vargas-Rameriz did his DNA studies, he found a unique pattern of DNA in the Colombian red-footeds, but there is not much literature I can find on this.

Eric and the other you guys who see so many of them- would you say that the pale head/limb colors are at least somewhat indicative of a Colombian type? And just to clarify- do they tend to have the 'northern' pale plastron?

Eric- do you have any good range info? Or even shaky range info??

Atypical Colombians are actually fairly colorful.......Most have red/orange heads, and are usually referred to as "clowns" by the majority of individuals that offer them.......The Yellow animals completely lack red pigment, and their skin color is lavenderish. The other Colombians have black or very dark skin..........

Either the population is different, or they are all anerythristic.......I don't think anyone has tried to specifically reproduce them, even though they are spread around the world, and everyone seems to have atleast one in their collection........

They come from a specific range, and I can't find the information off hand at the moment. Their Plastron is no different than any other Colombian, or Northern Redfoot I've seen........

Here is one of mine as Geochelone_Carbonaria mentioned. She's an older girl, in her late 30s. She has no red on her at all.

This female has a little bit of orange on her legs, but no red at all on her face.

EricIvins said pretty much what I would say about Colombian red-footed tortoises. The yellow and black Colombian animals I used to keep would produce all yellow and black neonates when bred to each other. No exceptions.
The hatchlings would range in color from bright lemon yellow to sort of a buttermilk color like this one...

DSC00043.jpg

The above hatchling came from a pair that was imported into the US in 1967. The male was lemon yellow with black but his skin was (is) sort of lavender. The female had zero red on her but she had various shades of yellow pigment on her like the neonate in these photos has. Some of these yellows would come close to being called orangish but there is absolutely NO red at all on them.
We had other Colombian tortoises that had all kinds of colors mixed together on their heads and legs that included carmine red and bright, bright orange. But if we bred one of the really colorful animals to the solid yellow ones the resulting offspring were an ugly dull orange. So after a few years we kept the yellow animals together and we got really pretty, but all yellow hatchlings.
I have slides of other Colombian animals but I really need to get off my rear end and get them on a disc.

Thanks Carl and Eric (and JD and Viper)!

Would any of you give me permission to use one or two of these photos on my site to help illustrate the regional variations? (I'd offer compensation, but it is a free site with no advertising so i don't make anything from it.)
