I am in Los Angles area, and I have always used Supersoil from Home Depot or Lowes.

I haven't tried using topsoil, but I do know that as long as it doesn't contain fertilizer & pesticides or anything that can harm the tortoise it's a no go. I'm sure you already knew that. I want to try it sometime, but for now I'm going to stick with the old fashion timothy hay.

The topsoil shouldn't contain fertilizer, pesticides & anything poisonous or harmful to the tortoise.

most (if not all) potting soil has some sort of perilite or other chemical based yucky stuff. top soil generally doesn't contain those things. there is always like an ingredient list on them, so just read it. anything ending in "-ite" is a no go! i think topsoil is pretty much soil, compost, and peat...

Oh, and instead of using soil, how about using playsand?

Hi...Do NOT use anything that says it has fertilizer or pesticide in it. The Miracle Gro can NOT be used. Look around Home Depot more or ask for help. I have seen organic soil in there. They might be out of it til spring tho, depending on where you live. I use play sand and cypress, both from Home depot. They also have small bags of Mosser Lee sphagnum moss that you can use in a hide. You will keep it moist and warm by spritzing it and keeping heat over it.
Good luck
Patsy

No, some humidity is good, especially for younger torts.

I use organic potting soil. That's what I was told to use and it seems to be working out great! It wouldn't be organic if it had chemicals in it. Got mine from Lowes.
