Do you have his humidity high enough? I've known them in the past to keep their eyes shut (or they get watery) if the humidity is too low. Also, could be a substrate issue. What type of substrate are you using?

One of my red foots is more sensitive to low humidity. If I keep it high, the eyes are fine, but when it gets low, the eyes get sticky. Does it open it after a time or does it never open. Jennifer

I keep Yellowfoot tortoises, not Redfoots, but if I let their habitat dry out they have trouble opening their eyes.

Hi Scumdeth, first things first, will you tell us how you have your enclosure set up for Arry or post some pics of it. What type of substrate are you using? What are the temps in the enclosure and the ambiant air temps and humidity?

O' Thank you people for answering, I spray the tank regularly once a day and the sphagnum moss is always wet , i have the heat bulb on for ten hours a day and he stays under it all the time , maybe i should mist him twice a day, would that be any help.
The heat bulb obviously only warms a spot area in the tank and the rest of the tank is room temp so would it help to heat half the tank by getting another bulb so half the tank is warm, thus creating more humidity?
I really appreciate your quick responses.
I really only noticed it today but i thought his eyes werent so big and bright yesterday.
Thank you again , i cant express my appreciation for your replies XXXX

I will post pics of everything tomorrow ( his tank, heater placement, his eyes and everything)
I cant thank you all enough!!!!!
Thank you!!!

Thank you everyone but i think that he may have had something in his eye because the next day he was fine with beautiful big eyes shining out at me.
Thank you all so much for your repliesXX

Scumdeth, I am glad to hear your RF is doing better. But Please read www.Turtletary.com and www.Redfoots.com
I only say this because I took care of a RF that was underdeveloped and had MBD and by using the methods on those sites I was able to turn this little girl around into a much happier and healthier RF. Her complete demeaner changed and she, after three months, was able to stand and walk on her back feet something she had not done in some time. Her owner is taking care of her in the same way as the site suggests and she continues to do good and make strides in her growth and temperment (not shy anymore).
I wish you the best with your RF.

Thanks for that Crazy 1, Turtletary is my god and i read and absorbed everything that he said many times before i got Arry. His pictures tell more than a thousand words and with his advice Arry and i will have a happy life together.
Does anyone else feel that it is strange to own a pet that will definately outlive you, im 34 now and Arry must be about 10 months ish, it is very comforting to know that my 9 year old nephew will inherit him when im incapable of looking after Arry, and he will probably be married with kids by then. At least he will be old enough to gain the knowledge that i am sure to learn over the next few decades.
Cheers again peeps xx
