Hey Guys!
Just thought you might like to see a new photo! I had to bring in Mortimer when the cold snap hit Central FL & when I stuck my head in a little later to check on him I found our cat Mouse sitting next to the shower door chatting with him! My wife has also told me that Mortimer likes to hang out near the fence that borders the chicken coop as well! Making friends everywhere he goes...

Too darn cute. Both of them. The tort is five or the cat is five? I'm assuming the tort.

That's adorable! He may be able to get back outside now that it's gonna get up to 85 degrees here in Central FL this weekend!

Decided to take a few more today!

I know it's hard to tell the sex on an Aldabra till mature but does anyone with more experience than me think they can hazard a guess? I called him Mortimer when he was little but now he's five and looking at that stubby tail I am starting to suspect he may be a Morticia! Lol

Based only on OTHER species of tortoise that I have seen, and a few Aldabs. my completely baseless emotion/gut guess tells me female. The head and face seems to look like the head and face I've seen on other female aldabaras of similar size.

What a cute face, is all I know.
And just so you know, OperaticAddict, there is a most beautiful David Austin English rose named MORTIMER Sackler. It is named after the man behind OxyCotin (boo-yuk-hiss-bad drug, bad drug), because his wife bought the rights to name the rose at a charitable auction. BUT the rose looks almost like a water lily at times, delicate and pink ... it should have been named after a ballerina, but that's what billions can get ya, your own rose named after you. I think your Mortimer would love to eat those roses and let's just say it was named after him, with no last name! Deal. : )

He certainly looks so cute and I can't wait to see how much he gains in the next year. One question: he seems to be pyramided. It this normal carapace growth for Aldabras? Do they need as much humidity as sullies to be smooth?

Good to know! That's a beautiful Rose, I lived in London for five years & was really spoiled with the English Country Gardens...they sure know their Roses!

It's a good question. My mother was caring for him in South Florida where the humidity is high enough so that you don't have to supplement much but I too noticed the pyramiding. We recently purchased a home in Central Florida with five acres of land and I am now able to monitor him personally and make sure his diet has enough variety to halt the process. From my understanding it won't go away but since he is only about six years old as he gets larger it will become less and less noticeable; assuming I am right about the diet and access to constant water.

I am sure there are a lot of people with a heck of a lot more experience than I do with Giant Tortoises, Aldabraman for example, but I love them. Growing up in Miami we always had tortoises...Leopard & Red /Yellow Foots. Much to my wife's dismay I took my Indian Star with me when I moved to NYC. All tortoises are interesting, but Aldabras just have such amazing personalities...full of deep thoughts. To own one you must have money, patience and above all else room to house them. It is a commitment not undertaken lightly. Hope this helps a little.
