Just got Donny and Raff today. Is fruit necessary for them? I don't want my Leopards chomping their sweets. Would two feeding dishes make a difference? ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1399541622.275425.jpg

I would feed them completely separately. They really should have zero chance of contact.

I'm assuming you're taking them out of their enclosures to feed them? Why not just feed them in their enclosure? I just throw a handful of weeds/fruit/Mazuri (day depending) onto a feeding rock daily, and remove what is left at the end of the day.

Please re-read all the care sheets for both species. The leopard tortoises require different care from the redfooted tortoises, but this is only one reason why they shouldn't be housed together. Another, and a very good reason, is because of the pathogens. Leopard tortoises from Africa would never come into contact with redfooted tortoises from South America. Because of this, they each have evolved with their own set of pathogens. They can make each other sick, or even dead.

To answer your question, yes, fruit should be on the menu for the RF tortoises.

Ok. Thanks peeps. So I read up on more information and it looks like I will be keeping them separate. The Reds hide all day but the leopards like to visit their hides. I also caught the leopard eating the reds fruit. As for the pathogens, I wouldn't want either to get sick.
