Yeah I'm getting a new higher wattage water heater today. I think the one in there has went. It's hard to tell since they don't light up or anything. Better safe than sorry.

I got an aquatic turtle water heater today. I was just going to get any submergible tank heater but the turtle one heats the water to 78 degrees, which is exactly what I'm trying to achieve. Hopefully this will solve my problems.

I plugged in my extra to the painted turtles yesterday and cranked up ms RES's water... so I'll bet they were feeling toasty :p

So my RES slept next to the new heater all night and I just fed him a meal worm and usually he hides when I come to the tank but went right for it and ate it in front of me. So I gave him another. I never really see him eat the pellets or baby shrimp so I hope he's not picking up bad habits and only eating the mealworms. After this week if I don't see him eat any pellets I will hold off on the guppies for a bit so I know he's getting a well balanced meal. When I get a chance I will count the guppies, maybe he has munched on them as well.
Overall it seems the water heater was exactly what he needed. Hopefully he will grow a good amount so I can find him a forever home!
Yellow turtle how are your guys doing?

This morning my painteds water was nice 77', and ms RES's 79.
I got some super worms and crickets yesterday, and they gobbled up the worms! (but spat out the crickets:( ) I agree, I don't want them falling into bad habits! Ms RES didn't spend as much time on land today, and more swimming about, this is so nice to know a solution is near!
Where did you get your little guy, for him to need to grow a little more?

Someone left him outside of the pet store I work nights at. Right in front of the door on a chilly night. Along with a note from a child saying they can't care for it anymore. Since it's so small we would never except it at the pet store and can't because we could get fined. So I am caring for it until it's 4inches. I use to have 3 RES' and I find them a pain to feed and house, well when they get bigger. I'm just not a fan of caring for aquatic turtles. Not with the filters and tank cleaning. Since this guy is so little it's not so bad, and thankfully there's just one.
We get so many RES brought to the pet store we are now making a aquatic turtle section with a big pond. So when he's big enough he will have a nice roomy pond to go in while he waits for a home.

I know a lot of turtles reach that same fate, though :( People can't or don't want to take care of them... :(
They do need A LOT of a space and filtration can get pricey, and many people who get RES as an impulse buy don't know the work and money these guys need! I totally understand your view, but I don't know, they just kind of my thing :p
That's a great idea. RES are such an issue with overpopulation right now, and being released into the wild (NEVER) that even your one pond could make difference. RES just get too big to live inside :(
I salute you or being so kind to little mr turt, and I hope he finds a great forever home :D

My coworker is having a devil of a time getting her adult RES to eat any veggies; do you guys have any tips?

(I figured I'd add to this thread, rather than start a new one, since the topic is similar.)

My painted turtles are not a fan of greens, but my YBS will gobble them up! I was told that a lot of turtles who top at larger sizes, can become mostly herbivorous... but, since my RESs are not fans either, I guess everyone is different! He can try water hyacinth, I'm trying to grow some, and the turtles go CRAZY for it!

None of the RES I ever owned ate greens. They would spit them out. I wouldn't worry to much the pellet diet is pretty varied. Lots of people come into my store buying large amounts of feeder gold fish because that's all their turtles will eat but it's not healthy. Goldfish are fatty. I always encourage them to switch to a mainly pellet diet.
