What temporary substrate can I use instead of coconut coir?

Thanks for your reply Tom. I do spray the soil down daily, but the heat tends to still cause some drying and mess. When my tort was abit younger I’d make sure the soil was properly soaked in places, but this has caused the viv to expand and look tatty. I really just need a temporary solution...

What temporary substrate can I use instead of coconut coir?

Hello! Hoping somebody can give me abit of advise. My 5 year old leopard tort has always had coconut coir as a big substrate. I’m currently in the process of selling my flat (mostly as my tort is getting big and I want to create an outdoor area for him so I’m looking at a house with a garden)...

Hello everyone! I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction. my leopard tortoise is getting to for this hide and I can’t find any now big enough on the market he will fit. I’m looking to make my own out of wood, but I’m worried on the types of wood I can and can’t use and if it...

    Plant I.D

The pet store advised - all the plants they had available were able to go into a viv, maybe just didn’t specify with what reptile. I still haven’t put this plant in as I’m unsure if it’s safe. Shame really, I think it would look good and work well.

    Plant I.D

You’re probably right! The pet store I brought this from had a list of plants ‘mixed ferns’ was on there, but the plants themselves were mixed up under uv lights - unlabelled and didn’t specify what they were, hence why I’ve ended up in this situation...

    Plant I.D

Awesome! Thanks for that - at least that’s one of the plants sorted. The petshop is very good and unlikely to sell anything harmful to torts, just want to make sure they are safe in the viv. generally my tort only eats the food in his bowl, however if I’m late feeding him he will go on munching...

    Plant I.D

Hello! I’m from the UK. I brought about 6 plants from Internet Reptile (local pet store and big online) the others I know are fine in the enclosure, but these I’m unsure of? I can’t quite identify them so thought I’d come and ask you lovely people! I put afew pics at different angles. Really...

My rescue has a few problems..

Thanks Lyn, I was going to a garden centre today to see if they have spider plants and Boston ferns or a few other things able to go into the enclosure. Wow a year?! It’s going to look boring in the enclosure for a while!, unless I can find somewhere else to source these plants...

My rescue has a few problems..

Thanks for your advice!, I’ve set up the new viv last night how you suggested, going to get a basking lamp later on today. I’ve had 2 torts in the past but never one as confident as this, he never hides in his shell, and runs around eating a lot. He seems very happy and is really enjoying his...

Also I have read the care sheet, just noticed it mentioned orchid bark.. didn’t know if knowledge had moved on over a few years and favoured the bark instead

My rescue has a few problems..

Thank you for replying Yvonne and thanks for your advice!. The sprinkling on the food is a multi vitamin given to the previous owner by the vet who examined the tort. The bulb is a uvb light but I’m unsure how old it is.. I was going to replace this regardless so I know for certain it is...

My rescue has a few problems..

Hello! A few days ago I acquired a Indian star tortoise from an old friend, after a visit she had at the vets scared her into thinking she couldn’t look after it, and offered me to look after it, since I’ve had years of experience with a sulcata tortoise (which eventually I had to donate to a...

Need advice on an Indian star care

Afew other details on the tortoises overall health and weight. The tort appears to have a ‘defect’ of some sort going on with its bottom beak. What could be done to improve this? The undershell is slightly soft (not as bad as I first thought.. Also the tort does appear to eat.. But may be...

Need advice on an Indian star care

Ok so I have just managed to get ‘shelby’ to mine from its previous owner.. here is a photo of its current set up. I’m not happy about the ceramic bulb.. this was added after a vet had mentioned it to be nessessary. I would like full scrutiny of this set up on on how it can be improved to...

Need advice on an Indian star care

Yeah I also thought it seemed quite active and lively from the photo - just seems quite small! (I believe the tort to be almost 3 years old) Yes I have read through the guide you have sent linked and it seems very similar to a guide I used for my previous sulcata.. so I’m positive I will be...
