Big sulcata together with small sulcata = Bad for the small one

I'm not that far away from you, in the central valley. Another trick some people have used is to aim a hair dryer down the burrow, and they will move towards the heat. Charlie only uses his heated house when it is cold too. He is still using this year, even though it is now 80F at 11pm. At the...

Big sulcata together with small sulcata = Bad for the small one

Charlie dug a burrow that ended up under our house. We worried that our house was going to collapse so we filled it in. Ever since we built him a house with heat he hasn't dug. We also made him a summer house with a roof to keep him cool. Where are you located? Is it warm enough all year for...

Big sulcata together with small sulcata = Bad for the small one

The cats will ignore him. The feral cats around here often have their babies in my yard as it is one of the few in the neighborhood without a dog. You should make sure he doesn't eat their poop. My tortoise is generally curious about people. Whenever they come into the yard, he follows them...

Big sulcata together with small sulcata = Bad for the small one

No, definitely not. Your buddy doesn't need any friends. Sulcatas like being alone. My 100+ pound sulcata is happiest when there are no other creatures around. He feels threatened by the cats that come into our yard. He stands close to them in an attempt to intimidate them to leave. They don't...

    Kane Heat Mat for Sulcata

Thank you for your responses! A bigger hide is out of the question for the moment. I might be able to do it next summer. For right now, I'd like advice on which size heat mat to get.

    Kane Heat Mat for Sulcata

Charlie's Kane heat mat has stopped working. I bought it at the end of 2016. Is it expected for them to stop working after so much time? I'm ready to buy another but before I do I have a question. Charlie is 22 years old and well over 100 pounds. I haven't measured him lately. My current mat is...

I think white and yellow grapefruit were the original varieties. Pink and red grapefruit were created later, in an attempt to make them sweeter. In my opinion, they ruined the flavor by doing this. I can put sugar on my white or yellow grapefruit to make it delicious. If you can find it, Oro...

I love white grapefruit. They are really hard to find. Every year we have to find someone with an orchard to buy from as they don't have them in the stores and hardly ever at the fruit stands. Then we have to buy a case so we are eating them like crazy to get through them before they go bad...

    ALDABRA TORTOISE BREEDER

I had problems this last summer with bees at my pool. It was full of chlorine so I don't know why they were attracted. Every day, I had to scoop out a dozen dead bees. I don't like to leave puddles because of mosquitos.

    ALDABRA TORTOISE BREEDER

I wonder if it would be different with well water. Our water is city water that has been treated with chemicals. I would imagine some creatures can smell or taste those chemicals.

We probably got some of yours! We had mint growing around our roses here in California for several years. We never planted it. It stopped coming in last year.

should parents allow kids and teens to get tortoises?

I wouldn't worry too much about whether or not the tortoise will outlive you; even an older tortoise could outlive you. Just have a plan for what should happen to it if you can no longer take care of it.

I think that could be normal. When your guy gets older, he will be better able to tear up his food.

    We’re picking him up tomorrow!

I've heard of people doing it when the tortoise is sick or not eating.

I'm not sure about the beak. Beaks can get overgrown easily. Putting the food on a stone or a rough surface helps keep it worn down. You should have heat on in his house during the night. Do you have a CHE?

Are you soaking daily? That is very important.

    Sulcata expert question.....

I think cats can bother tortoises. You can't always tell when your tortoise is distressed. We have feral cats in our yard. Charlie often stands next to them. It isn't because he likes them. He is trying to intimidate them into leaving his territory.
