The previous owners of my tortoises had done many things wrong, there was no UV light, (just a regular lamp bulb) and they were being fed fruit and veg, and water-expanding pellets. I changed the lamp bulb for a UV strip light, and got a ceramic heating element. I feed them mainly dandelions...
That's exactly what I did, the vet and professional in the reptile shop (who have both owned tortoises and other reptiles all their life) said that due to the setup the previous owner had, Terry got an RI. They had a heat mat under soil, and according to them the heat mat evaporated some...
My tortoise Terry has just recovered from his respiratory infection, some changes to the viv were made as well, as the previous owners gave me incorrect information on their heating & lighting, which the vet said could well be linked to his infection. All is well now though, and he is now more...
Thank you very much, I have read the care sheet and renovated the enclosure accordingly, and I have been following the daily care routine provided, and the time and money is more than worth it to have healthy happy tortoises
I currently have a tortoise who has a respiratory infection, he's been prescribed some antibiotic shots and some reptoboost for his baths. Have any of you had tortoises with similar problems? Have they recovered? How long after their treatment did you start to notice positive effects? Thanks :)
Terry has a respiratory infection and has been given an antibiotic that i need to give him every 3 days; his next shot is due Sunday. I was also given some 'reptoboost' to bathe him in. Their enclosure has been entirely renovated, with a proper UVB strip light and a ceramic heater and...
I got the UV light to replace the regular bulb, it's a 'hongyi long life vitamin D3'. Terry's eyes are still not open :( However before I went out today, I left two little chunks of cucumber in his bowl, and one had been almost completely eaten, so it seems as though he is eating. Is it...
The largest is just under 4 inches from the back of her shell to her head; this is the female who has been eating etc. the male is about an inch smaller.
I am getting a UV bulb tomorrow, so that should hopefully solve any problems regarding that. I must ask if the dimensions you provided are for Russian tortoises of any size, as mine are both very small. thanks :)
they were previously fed some expanding food called 'tortoise diet complete holistic diet & balanced nutrition', the brand is 'komodoproducts'. he also eats radishes, and salad leaves.
Tortoises have been separated, I shall be purchasing an identical enclosure at the start of next month :) I shall go out and collect some dandelions; are there any other foods that will help? hopefully Terry's eyes will be open and he'll be eating soon :D
I've seen him dip his head underwater, so this must be him drinking. I will create a seperation ASAP. is there any way to encourage him to eat? I'm worried he can't see his food
His eyes are still closed, and there is a wire going into the soil and in this area the soil is warm, and the bulb produces quite a lot of heat; i feel the heat when i put my hand inside.
also, he seems to hate soaking, he scratches at the edge of the tub :( he still hasn't eaten either, however he seems much more active when alone and doesnt hide away in his shell
Well I was not given a UV bulb, however I ordered one from amazon prime yesterday so it should be here today or tomorrow. I am currently using what I believe is a normal desk lamp bulb, 240V. It was already in the enclosure when i got them. How would I go about measuring the temperature?
