I think that’s wonderful. Sometimes my tortoise does a tour of the garden (under my watchful eye) then comes and stands between my feet and just stays there. I pick him up and hold him close and he seems quite relaxed and content.
Thank you Angie, that was my feeling too and he hasn’t done it since. He often gives me a nudge with his nose if I stop stroking him so he definitely enjoys being handled. It’s good to get a reply that isn’t negative.
Hi, I want some opinions please on why my 2 year old Hermann suddenly nipped me on my chin when I was cuddling him. I handle him every day and he usually loves to be stroked and petted. What did I do wrong? He hasn’t done it since. I’ve had him since he was three months old.
What a good coincidence this article is. Only today I noticed my tortoise’s penis showing for the first time. It gave me a shock as he is only just over a year old, so I didn’t expect to see anything for at least another year. I’m M glad to say it pops in and out easily.
Oh that’s a tragedy. You must be feeling so low. At least you can comfort yourself in the knowledge that you nurtured him and you gave each other joy for 12 years.
Hello lovely Tanyao,
I’m so very sorry to hear of your loss. I can imagine very well the pain you are going through. I have to say, I personally get very cross when people suggest you simply ‘replace’ your beloved pet, as if that makes everything alright. It doesn’t, you need to have time and...
Hello Suey,
I live in the UK too. Obviously I don’t know exactly we’re you live but I am in the suburbs of London and we get foxes in our garden. There are also rats in every area, so you will probably have predators. Also, we have magpies and parakeets which can do a lot of damage to tortoises.
I’m glad someone has asked that question because I have been reducing mine and now we have this heatwave I’m not using any heat at all. Pebbles has a large, shaded run and hide in the garden and that’s where he spends his days. I’ve kept his indoor run shaded so it’s lovely and cool.
I have a 9 month old Hermann tortoise and I have always hand fed her, just because I love to. She does eat independently of me, but she loves soaked dandelion pellets and I feed her these by hand. I think it helps us to bond; she runs over to me when I'm ready to feed her. She's never bitten me.
