    tortoise going camping

in my opinon , from what i've seen a heat mat in one area of the enclosure is not a bad idea , a heat mat is not a heating pad , they can't possibly burn themselves on a heat mat made for animals , i've used them for newborn puppies , forever ..... as long as they can get off it ,they figure...

looks fine as long as it's sunny , you can always provide shade , you can't make sun ...... and it can't be a spot that floods ......... lots of weeds/plants , box turtle love to burrow at the root of bushes or under clumps of grass ..... the more hiding spots the more protectced from predators...

Intro and help needed with hatchling eastern box turtle

i use small pens in sunny locations , i can tell you without doubt , you don't want to use a tub , they need access to the natural ground , they use the ground to thermoregulate ...... a 3foot by 4 foot pen is plenty big enough to raise a hatchling box turtle for 2 yrs ...... there is no...

i'd keep him and head start him for a year or two ....... south carolina is one of the states that allows folks to take wild box turtles , eventually they'll come to realization it's not a good idea , every state use to let folks take them , reality eventually becomes apparent ...... as far as...

Hole getting bigger on Opo's shell.

i'd get an opinion from a vet ...i'd think markw would be a good source for an opinion .... i'd guess it's like an injury or detachment to your fingernail bed ...... the reason it would get bigger is because the shell is growing and the keratin is not forming in those spots ...... possibly...

    Relocating & Hibernation?

i doubt heat would be necessary , you need to control the temps as best you can , temp probes in the leaf pile at ground level , air temp inside the pen .......... the ground is pretty stable under a large leaf/grass pile .......... a basking spot in the spring , a mercury vapor , infra red or...

your definitely correct with the 70 on a sunny 30 degree , and above freezing on a 5 degree day , actually from what i seen about right on ...... takes some venting to keep that from happening ...... thankfully over the winter months we seldom get sunny days , with the lake here we are pretty...

    Relocating & Hibernation?

i don't think they come up until the ground temp has been near 50 for a week or so ., i don't believe daylight is a factor ....... i'd think that'd be mid to late may in maine .... i also think they'd be down by the end of september or early october ............ a limiting factor in the range...

the plant hardiness zone is 4b -5a ? the northern extent i'm experienced with is 5b-6a , it's also as far north as i'm aware they naturally occur ...... i doubt they occur in 4b-5a , the reason probably being the short active season , possibly the ground temps , depth and length of time it...
