1st thought when I saw this was....

Strawberry Shortcake! lol Little Matilda enjoying her breakfast. It was funny, the nightcrawlers I put into her moss, well, they move at night...duh, "nightcrawlers" right? So Matilda is chowing down on her fruit but wow, how fast she went into "hunting mode when she heard one in the shallow...

    Matilda's Weigh day & I forgot!

I stayed home yesterday and "worked from home" since I had not fallen asleep the night before. My drive is 92 mls rnd trp and not safe for anyone without sleep. A lot of us know and appreciate "work from home" on days without a lot going on. Heck, I got the laundry done, AC's installed in the...

    Off topic....hornworm disposal

I had the darndest thing happen yesterday! I still have a few of the hornworms, now 3-4 inches long so I decided to feed them to the birds. I lowered my feeders and placed on on the spar between them(you can see in pic). As I was doing this, I noticed one of my girls sunning herself, a large...

    3am pic of Matilda

Posting just for fun...... This morning she was bulldozing the moss. That's how she searches for her worms.....she knows they hide in the moss so she goes in low and gets under it, then plows through while looking. I counted out 10 decent size worms Sunday when I cleaned and refreshed her home...

How to tell: What is "normal" weight for a 1 year old Eastern Box turtle?

Help from the "experienced" here? Since few of us are Veterinarians or professional animal keepers or whatever today's term for it is, what is a "normal" weight for a 1 year old?? We all check bright, clear eyes as a huge indicator and general temp/activity ratio , good clear solid breathing...

Weird short true story.......definitely reptile related!

This is a true story and while I've wondered if what we saw was real, for whatever reason, I never asked. Years ago in the late 90's, I was taking my 8 year old son from our local community pool up to the ball field for his practice. The distance was about 200 yards through the swim club...

Matilda's New Digs(or is it "crib"?)

Technology is amazing......this morning at 9:38 I ordered Moss for Matilda's latest home-makeover, at 2:30 Mr Bezo's put it on my front porch! Love it! Anyway, her new home is tilted to keep the gravel mostly dry.......1/2" of water under the moss. The Design is to make the left side cool side...

It's 2am, do you know where your Matilda is?

I heard her moving so I snapped the pic with the flash on! OH NO!! She was just waking up and coming out of her dig for the night; She does this weird "circle thing" where she spins as she digs in, getting deeper as she goes, then she spins out... She is my 1st baby but I've never seen one...

    Matilda actively hunting at night?

Okay, I ask the collective talent.....is this something you guys have seen too? I recently did her home a makeover, incorporating earth and super worms into her soil. I have seen earthworms traversing the surface at night if I turn on a light and apparently, she has caught on! I can hear more...

My turn.........Matilda dragging food into water?

I have had turtles since I was very young...under 5 and have never seen this behavior before. Matilda drags her food into water sometimes, I'm assuming to soften it? This morning, slices of radishes(2nd fav only to worms) and tomato slices in her FOOD dish.....I just got home and the radish...

    Fruit day for Matilda

I try to mix it up for her but will leave things she likes....occasionally, we try new things....today was banana for the first time! Come on, of course I know it isn't a natural food for her....either is being kept by a gentle giant...so it's all good. She apparently likes it, a lot! The...

I should have had the camera setup!

As little Matilda(Baby EBT) matures, she faces ever-larger challenges. After seeing the sheer ferocity that she displayed after hunting down and eating a worm, I've tried to add them weekly to her diet. Last night while mowing the lawn I found a nice 6" worm but it was more like the worm...

Question re: babies....Yes, box turtle babies!

Are they like puppies? Will they eat for as long as there is food to eat? Matilda hasn't displayed this particular behavior before, nor have I seen it before in any of the guys I've had. I put earthworms in.......holy God, she sprinted once they were in sight....and she had already eaten...

    Introducing Matilda.....Eastern box baby girl....

I've lurked here long enough to see that there's some good and turtle-talented folks here! Here is my latest sweetie...... Found her upside-down on a park asphalt path, dropped by a bird or kicked up by a jogger. Beautiful little girl...who eats like a BEAST! She lives in acrylic for now...
