Compassion for tortoises compared to mammals

I feel more awestruck than love or compassion for my redfoots. The way they move with determination but not speed, their demeanor that dominates their pen. Sort of like elephants and rhinos but in a manageable size. They show me a peacefulness in their pace of a long life span. I think it’s more...

    Baby redfoots and outdoor enclosure

Great looking enclosure. Although I’m not a big fan of babies outside and you say your enclosure Is predator proof, one of the scariest and smallest for babies is fire ants. Please keep a constant check for these. They can pop up overnight and overwhelm a small tort very quickly.

    Mazuri?

The original 5M21 I believe is more versatile. I soak it in a shallow tray with just a little water and serve it to my adult RFs “Al Dente”. I believe the semi hard center helps keep their beaks in shape while making it easier for them to swallow. The sluff from the bottom of the bag can also be...

Redfoot desperately wants out of enclosure

A pen with rounded corners and no obstructions around the inside periphery will keep him on the move with no corners to climb. Lots of exercise this way. Once had a free roaming male that would not stop pacing until he got passed quarantine and was introduced to my lady torts.

    Port Charlotte, FL Repticon

Been to a few Repticons and they’re OK. Expect to see mostly ball pythons and leopard geckos. These shows are for breeders and generally torts don’t breed fast enough or in the various color morphs that snakes and lizards do to be as profitable. If they do have torts they’re usually Redfoots and...

    ipomoea leaf ID (challenging!)

Looks a lot like an invasive we have here in Florida. Air Potato (Dioscorea bulbifera) a vine that grow airborne tubers. Might not be the same but maybe same family. Don’t know if toxic or not.

How To Tell What is Expert Advice?

I believe that anyone considering themselves an absolute expert is in the process or has already closed their mind to new suggestions. Although I have limited posts and thread starts, I consider myself, having kept four Redfoots for over thirty years, an experienced hobbyist. Read and weight...

The Air Space in the Egg

I have read that an egg shell is porous for the exchange of oxygen, carbon dioxide also water. I can’t believe that when an embryo is ready to hatch that there would be any room for air space. I keep Redfoots who’s eggs chalk after being layed so a visible air bubble can’t be candled. It needs...

TVs The Curse Of Oak Island...

I think it’s been on for five years. You’d think they could have turned the whole island inside out by now. I wish they would show a running total of how much they’ve spent on searching as a bottom runner during the show. Do you think they found anything that was not reported to the Canadian...

    Mixing Redfoots and Cherryheads?

I too am a bigger fan of regular RFs over cherryheads. None prettier than a papaya orange head, yellow neck, bright red and black legs and a high yellow and brown carapace. I prefer a mixed palate of color on RFs.

    Help with garden pond

A surface skimming biofilter along with your UV sterilizer is best for ponds. Oak pollen and flowers are starting to turn my pond a tannic tea brown. Overflowing your pond will act as a skimmer. Also check for Cuban Tree frog eggs, they can turn a small pond nasty real quick. Slow down feeding...

Is HE or isn't SHE? The confusion continues

I believe that a 10 year old male would be much more concave than Julio and have a much bigger tail. My opinion is that Julio is Juliette, female. Here’s a pic of my 6 year old male, really changed over the last year.

    Moral/Ethical Business Dilemma

@Tom, good to see the arbitrator absolved you of all responsibility. Might be a good thing that a second tort is not placed in the same situation. One’s bad, two’s worse. You attempted to resolve the situation and they took it elsewhere. Sleep well and keep supplying torts with a clear conscience.

What's the recommended serving size for Mazuri?

My adult Redfoots get a single layer in a cafeteria size tray once a week. Feeds and satisfies five. Other six days fruits and/or veggies. Hibiscus cuttings every day to graze on.
