Well I have coco coir and some topsoil as a base layer to grow terrarium grass, and fir bark on top. I just spot clean and you shouldn't have to completely change out substrate often unless there are serious problems like mold or bugs. I think that as long as you do a daily cleanup of leftover...

It might be possible. There are some things I worry about, like crazy weather changes, predators, unhealthy plants, but that may just be me being overly protective. Also I've only ever kept him outside during the day while someone was around to supervise. But of course I'm open to suggestions
