Exactly, "what is optimal for the owner should still be what is best for the tort" what proof is there that a larger space is at all better for the tortoise and doesn't just make the keeper feel better? We cant exactly ask them. There is no definitive proof that torts do better in larger spaces...
Your personifying the tortoise. They dont have the mental capacity to assign value to space. Just because the larger space makes us humans feel better it doesn't mean squat to the tortoise. Space is space it's not a good thing nor a bad thing to them. So even though bigger is better I believe a...
No I understand the criticism, and I dont intend on making a full care guide, but rather a guide on how to make an affordable enclosure that a tortoise could thrive in. People always recomend a 4x8 but dont have any recomendation on how to get one besides building it yourself. Also not to many...
What is the proper indoor enclosure size for the common testudo(russian, hermanns, greek)? Over the years I have seen multiple recomendations for size from the good old 4x8 to the 2x3 as a minimum. But what does a tort really need? We all know the saying bigger is always better. Yet there are...
Have a male russian tortoise in my creep with some red in his eye and was wondering what everyone thought. Just trimmed his beak with a dremel so some dust might have gotten in there and caused the nictitating membrane to inflame, or it might be a blood vessel popping.
Recently one of my tortoises has had exceedingly runny green pops. I am guessing that she got into something she shouldn't have in the garden. What is the absolute highest fiber foods available to help her re regulate? 8 inch female Russian in a 2.6. Also would it be recommended to separate her...
So it's always a play it by ear situation. What would u recomend for my position (time of year, age, species). Also what some of the more subtle signs of agression? I know guarding food can be one but what else.
I currently have a 2-3 year old male hermanns who is a slight pacer (reflecting some territorial behavior.) I would like to form a breeding group with other juveniles but am unsure. Obviously I know and hope eggs wouldn't appear for another few years for health reasons. I'm am only worried that...
Recomendations on how to finish enclosure with a door? Top trim can be removed, 1/2 plywood and 2x4s. I want a plexiglass door but cant think of how to attach/latch it. Would gluing it to a wood frame be the best option?
4 or 5 years old. Want her space for another program I'm working on so no rush to get her out the door. Will ship to the right forever home, at your exspense. Live in upstate ny. She is a microplasma carrier so breeding/cohabiting isnt recommended. Article for more info on microplasma below...
Anything loose in a bag, orchard bark, that has moisture can carry bugs. Usually just spring tails which usually stay within enclosure. Gnats/fruit flys are the horrible one. If you get dehydrated/condensed coco coir unluckily to have eggs, loose in bag with moisture, possibility.
The easiest at home way to "sterilize" is by baking. 300 for 30min, same as boiling water. As Tom said it's not a good idea to use commercial topsoil because both "organic" and "sterile" are just buzz words for companies and you never really know what you're going to get. I use "organic" garden...
Yes, just trying to find the balance of brightness, not to little light so it always seems like dusk, but not to much that the entire enclosure is overly lit, I will probably go with an led flood pointed at the ceiling.
