    Enclosure Renovations

We've had a bit of extra time on our hands lately and decided to make a few updates to our Russian's indoor enclosure. We've extended it by 10-inches on one end (now 9 x 4 feet), re-lined it all, replaced the substrate and added a few extra plants. She's got 3 different basking areas with new...

    New Indoor Table for Russian

Thanks so much! Yes I can imagine it's quite a bit different with a tortoise that size! That being said, this is brand new before we got her in there. One day down and she's completely trampled the plants, and done a good job covering every available surface with her substrate trail :p

    New Indoor Table for Russian

Not to worry, that's just the filter on my phone. They don't look like that in reality :-) Her basking lamps are a 100 watt a 165 watt UVB Mercury Vapor Lamp (UV & Heat).

    New Indoor Table for Russian

We've just upgraded from a 4x4 to a 4x8 foot table for our little tort :)(About as big as we can possibly fit in our apartment!) She's about 13cm in length, 320g, so far from fully grown. But we are hoping this will be adequate for her for years to come.

    Tortoise Wheezing / Making Sound?

Thanks for the response! She is eating, mucus-free, not very active but that seems to be her normal state at the moment! (Or for the past few months at least.)

    Tortoise Wheezing / Making Sound?

I am hoping somebody in the forum may be able to offer some advice here- for the last couple of days my tortoise has been making a tiny coughing sound. She's done it a couple of times after eating or doing something strenuous (such as lifting herself up onto a rock, or making a poop.) You can...

    Overweight Tortoise?

I was just after a bit of advice regarding the weight of my tortoise. She's currently a very big fan of eating, but is unfortunately very inactive. She spends most of the day basking under her light, napping under her heat lamp, and wandering around a tiny bit in between to search out the best...

For sure- I think it helped though :)

    Tort Passing Urates Daily

That makes sense actually- I've noticed she's straining a bit when she poops lately and it seems a lot dryer than it used to be. I'll give this a go :-)

    Tort Passing Urates Daily

Hi all- I posted this in the RT forum, but it was suggested that I post it here as well to get the opinion of some more experienced members: For the past 2-3 weeks my tortoise has been passing urates daily- sometimes twice a day. She passes them together with a lot of clear urine every time...

    Enclosure Update

Thanks so much! This is 4.5 x 4.5 feet. At the moment our tortoise is still quite small (3.5 inches long) so it's a decent size for her, but we will probably upgrade to a bigger one next year :-)

They're from a friend's garden. Just gave them a thorough clean before putting them in there!

    Tort Passing Urates Daily

Oh, my mistake- I feel a bit stupid now! But the frequency of her passing urates has really increased. She actually won't poop when she's in her enclosure or in her bath. So she can go 2-3 days without pooping at all...the moment I let her roam around on her towel for a few minutes after she's...

    Tort Passing Urates Daily

For the past 2 weeks my tortoise has been passing urates almost daily. She passes them together with her urine every time. I've been doing research on her diet, and I don't think I'm doing anything wrong food-wise in terms of excess protein or oxalates. Of course, it's winter so I don't really...

    Enclosure Update

Yes I know, it can be really difficult! We're lucky to live very close to a specialist reptile store, and the owner was able to order plants that were grown specifically for enclosures and to be safe for eating. The smaller shrubs (which she eats from time to time) are Callisia, which is also...

    Overeating & Inactive

Okay great, thank you. We use coco coir with a small amount of orchid bark. The substrate is pretty damp under the surface, but the top dries out under the lamps each day so I re-moisten it regularly. Her hide is around 65% humidity at the moment. I think I can rig something up this weekend to...
