1/2 inch works fine to line the wall. What do you mean free standing? I was thinking we were talking about a room size enclosure. Even a full room size enclosure is very small for and adult sulcata

I would recommend 18 inches up the wall with plywood.

Yes I like to keep the pond shallow so I know they can’t trap each other under the water
