    Russian Tortoise Breeding in AZ

We keep a group of Russians on the ground in Phoenix. We had one infertile clutch last year. This year, we identified three clutches and ended-up with one hatchling. Given the dramatic growth of several female last year and this year appearing the be the first clutches for at least two of...

    Leopard tortoise emerges from brumation

Thank you for the post; this is interesting. What are typical daytime temperatures during the brumation period? Your tort has some distinct carapace marks. I always wonder what story lies behind a shell with character like that.

Thick urine, like raw egg whites

So, gout was presumed, not diagnosed with a high degree of certainty. I'm not saying this is inappropriate; that is the way many things are diagnosed and subsequently treated. However, it does sound as though the diagnosis is far from set in stone. What medication was used for the presumed gout?

Baby tortoise we’re not sure what’s wrong PLEASE HELP

Upon hatching, the shell shape is often malformed-appearing based upon the confines of the egg shell. That usually resolves spontaneously. So, the rounded-appearing plastron can be expected to go away on its own. However, it does appear to have a some congenital limb defects which cannot be...

Warning about not having proper drainage in outdoor enclourses

I second the idea of a French drain. Based upon the pictures of your enclosure, it would appear that you are handy-enough to construct that on your own. Do you know how much of that flooding came from rainwater landing directly into the enclosure versus runoff from the rest of the yard? It...

Thick urine, like raw egg whites

I'd like to clarify. Are you saying that your tortoise was treated for gout based upon the quality of its urine?

does anyone know how old and or what type of turtle this is?

Without a doubt, this is an eastern box turtle. Although the red eyes suggest male, I'd want to see the plastron, tail, and hind legs before committing to an opinion of its sex.

    Found a baby!

That always makes for a great day, looking into an enclosure and discovering an unanticipated, micro-turt. I'm excited for you.

    Is this for real?

I have noticed a couple of Aldabra scams on CL in Arizona. This is undoubtedly the same.

Found Tortoise in the Road and Don't know what kind he is

As a couple of folks said, it appears pretty clearly to be Testudo. Also as mentioned, figuring-out exactly which Testudo is often a real challenge.

    Light Bulb Ban

Tom, you said it, "...once great state." While there are positive things to be said about California, it is very low on my list of places to reside. I deeply love our country. However, this totalitarianism seems to be effecting us all. The continual erosion of "our" core values, ideals upon...

    Winter must be over!

Also in Phoenix, our little shelled troops have begun to mobilize as well. Some of the Russians are up and have begun their breeding attempts. A few specimens from each of several species of box turtle have begun to bask and feed as well. Like yours, our desert tortoise has also been more...

Built an outdoor cart for my small box turtles

It looks great. I see that you have some delicious strawberry treats planted for them. Sadly, I could never trust myself with this sort of set-up. As soon as I turned around, I'd get distracted by something else, only to remember hours later that I'd left my babies in the scorching sunlight.

    New Leopard Nest... in January?

Consistent with this comment, another, larger female keeps going through the motions of nest-digging on the large rubber mat that lines the floor of their heated shed. She gets into that trance-like state and attempts to dig and dig and empties her bladder in an effort to dampen the "dirt."...

    New Leopard Nest... in January?

Agreed. The clutch in question is from a larger female, originally from another source. The male that came with that group was named "CC" by the previous owner based upon his "C" shaped carapacial markings as a hatchling. If one believes the 2-dot = pardalis line of thinking, it could be...

    New Leopard Nest... in January?

I suppose you two are right. I don't know if we even hit 70 degrees yesterday. I was a little surprised she was up to the task without a bit more warmth. As the temps dipped down to 60 and it was getting dark, I abbreviated her nest-burying and put her back into the heated shed. This is the...
