Tortoise enclosure at Liberty Science Center too small overall? And too bright at night?

The lights inside the enclosure were off. But the multiple windows allowed plenty of light from outside to spill into the enclosure. The tortoises seemed to be struggling to find darkness. It would be nice if there were shades that could be pulled down to darken the enclosure each night.

Tortoise enclosure at Liberty Science Center too small overall? And too bright at night?

Hi everyone, Last night I went to Liberty Science Center's After Dark event. It's held every first and third Thursday of the month from 6PM to 10PM. My coworkers and I were having a blast when we stumbled on the tortoise exhibit. I took some photos. It appears to be way too small for the...

    Devastated.

Maybe a small device can be made and attached to the shell of a tortoise to alert an owner when he/she has flipped over. If it was cheap enough, every tortoise could have one. It could potentially be solar powered as well.

    Introducing Rocks

Yeah that would be perfect. Really you just need them to walk over it and that can be accomplished by just running it all the way across. Funny story actually, when I first added the rocks I thought he would think of it as a wall and never climb but he immediately climbed over and sat on his...

    Introducing Rocks

Very true! Another thing is smooth rocks are important. Too rough and they could damage their plastron with repeated trips over the obstacle. So smooth rocks and only having small rocks would likely work just as well.

    Introducing Rocks

Around 2 months ago I placed some big rocks in the middle of my enclosure. The original intention was to provide a way for my Cherryheads nails to trim down naturally since they seemed to be getting rather long. The rocks have worked excellent. Putting a CHE well above the rocks is a great way...

Someone on reddit saying that owning a tortoise supports the illegal pet trade. Thoughts?

Dont forget the overpowered heat lamp, low humidity and no UV bulb usually accompanied by a setup like the one you described :(. Sadly there's currently no way to prevent people with good intentions from purchasing and abusing an animal. Thats why I dont think I could ever become a breeder -...

Someone on reddit saying that owning a tortoise supports the illegal pet trade. Thoughts?

Thank you the replies everyone, I've read them all in detail. Nobody critiqued the title of my post but I understand arguing or debating on social media platforms can be a bit cringe. However, I'm happy that I brought this to the attention of the forum - after my debate with the reddit user I...

Someone on reddit saying that owning a tortoise supports the illegal pet trade. Thoughts?

Thought I had a handle on this topic but honestly the commenter got me digging a bit. Based on my research I still dont see anything to suggest that certain tortoise purchases are illegal or support the illegal pet trade. Was hoping maybe some members/breeders here could shed some light on some...

My Cherryhead broke 1kg this week! Wanted to share

Thank you! It's interesting to see how his coloring changes over time. You can see some of the coloring difference below. Top photo is from 3.5 years ago at 125-150g. Bottom is from today at 1.023kg.

    Red Foot and lighting/heating

Alright, quick add-on since I wanted to collect some extra information. I have a Solarmeter 6.5, it's truly the best way to make sure your lil'guy is getting proper amounts of UVB. It's pricey so not every owner can immediately afford one unfortunately. That being said I would try to get your...

    Red Foot and lighting/heating

My temp gradient is from 83-87 (Daytime) to 80-82C (Nightime). I do not have a designated basking spot. My light fixtures are as follows.... 100W CHE connected to thermostat set for 85 (Middle of enclosure) 60W CHE connected to same thermostat set for 85 (Placed on one end of the enclosure, the...

    Fecal Smear Identification

Sorry for the late response, I got caught up in some other stuff today. So I talked with the vet out in the parking lot. She explained that they had 2 techs/vets examine the stool sample independently and then notes were compared. The stool sample ended up being fresh since he went to the...

    Fecal Smear Identification

I called a few different clinics and I found one that would do tortoise fecal examination. Unfortunately, they only agreed to do it after a checkup. I will stress on the forms and to the doctor that I want no injections or adminstered medication until we discuss. Due to the covid situation I...

    Fecal Smear Identification

I think thats the right call. Im near Binghamton, NY so there's not many reptile specific vets. Ill take a look around on google and see who I can find. I would like the peace of mind.

    Fecal Smear Identification

Based on my limited research of googling and after running the pictures by my SO who is a Biology major in college.... my best guess at the moment is that it is some intestinal protozoa.
