I haven't tried that, no. I have tried plugging it in without the timer and it seemed to be fine but I didn't really leave it long enough though I don't think. I might try it with a normal bulb. Thanks for the suggestion :)

Yeah that's a hermann's tortoise and it is quite old/big so definitely needs an 8x4 foot enclosure or bigger. Might be possible to build an inside enclosure out of plywood but your best bet is to build one outside in your back garden.
