    Rescue turtle questions

Update on the rescue. He is doing well. The wounds are healing beautifully. After today's soak some of the scabing came off to reveal nice new skin. At this rate he can have his epoxy shell and be back in the wild next spring!

    Rescue turtle questions

Recently I took in an injured box turtle. She was hit by a car and has shell damage. I brought her to a vet and am working with him for eventual release back to wild. Here's the question; what would you use for fungal growth on the affected area where there is no shell. I'm using providone...

Wintering my new three-toed box turtle in Texas.

Murph sure is a cute little fella. I really like that habitat you made for him. For our shell-babies this year, we are bringing them into a garage that has a very large box w/ a dirt/sphagnum mixture. There favorite hide tends to hold water during a heavy rain. We are reworking some of the...

    Fire Ants!!!

@Pastel Tortie That is incredibly helpful. Thanks. We live in a heavily wooded rural area. Looks likely be starting an earwig colony soon. In addition to turtles, we also keep 5 different species of frog so we can feed them on earwigs too. Cant be any harder than crickets and mealworms. Lol

    Fire Ants!!!

So the ants are so bad that I'm going to bring my shell-babies in for the winter and exterminate the ants then. I'm still fighting them with no apparent end in sight. I have literally tried everything. Come October/ November the turtles come in and the ants will be terminated. I'm going to use...

So the colorful one is male and the other one is female? Mine are just the opposite. So much so that I thought my male was a girl.....

Wintering my new three-toed box turtle in Texas.

My male 3 toed has wintered inside every year (because he was not full grown yet) and flat refused to eat anything but the odd worm every few weeks. All he wants to do is burrow and hide. I live in southeast Texas about 30 minutes north of Beaumont. It's so frustrating but also so normal.

    Fire Ants!!!

Living in southeast Texas, fire ants can be a real issue. I've been using a permethrin liquid to spot treat but the ants are getting out of hand in the turtle habitat. What really works that is safe for the turtle habitat? I mean REALLY works. These things are a total menace.

    Just curious.

Thanks for all the input and advice. When we get ready to take the redfoot plunge I want to have everything ready to go. Prices checked, outdoor and indoor areas made, hides and heat areas ready.
