ive just seen on a reptile suppliers website a list of tortoises most of the breeds say captive bred but the horsefields say captive farmed .
what is the difference ?

can i please have...
im in the uk and recently bought two horsefields tortoises from a reptile center . i specifically asked if they were captive bred because i didnt want a wild caught one and id heard about the horrid way they are transported . i was told yes they were captive bred. that put my mind at ease. later...
i use top soil without the sand . my non proffesional advice would be to keep the heat on him and increase the number of soaks in warm water. dehydration is a major killer of any small animal and i doubt tortoises are any different. i wouldnt hassle him to play just keep him warm and well...

Sounds like it will be a beautiful home for your babies! What kind of tortoises are they?
yes its tall , over 6feet . the plan for the enclosure so far is pondliner on the floor with bricks built up to about two feet high then filled with soil to about 8 inches deep. i will be bringing them in at night as im in england and it never stays very warm at night.i think what i will do is...
im planning on building my torts permanant enclosure inside the large dog run i have . this will protect them from dogs cats and foxes.
however i read somewhere that birds are a risk to torts . is this true ? at what size is a tortoise safe from birds ?. we dont have any really big birds here...
i used to keep budgies and when i did i used to throw the husks out onto the garden always some seed used to go with it and it would sprout in the garden.
i have a left over bag of millet seed , if i grow it so it sprouts can my tortoises eat it , ive not read anything on it either way .
thanks.
do you think im doing the wrong thing by putting them outside in the day when its hot ? i read its good for them but on the other hand do you think its the moving from one enclosure to the other each time that could be stressing her out. the bigger one is quite interactive and trundles...
hi
yesterday when i put my tortoises out in the sun the little one matilda immediatly burried herself in the soil until she was completly covered. she didnt come out again.
when the temperature dropped i brought them in, i had to dig her up to do that and she was completly in her shell...
its iilegal to feed live food here (except bugs) so its not that its just the fact it was once a furry . i had a pet rat once and he was cute ive also kept gerbils , i cant imagine my daughters face if i had a freezer full of rats and mice lol i went to a pet store the other day and it had a...
yes the face says chow , but who knows . i was thinking a leo would have been a more likely mix but it depends what breeds are popular in the area he came from.
sorry about your other dog. i lost a dog to bone cancer last september. it was horrible so my heart goes out to you ((((hugs))))
ok this is just a first thought have you checked the skin, like where his neck and legs go into his shell, my first instict was too think that something is stuck in there and irritating/hurting him.
it totally is ! im sure they have about as much gear as my kids did , even my daughter is complaining. she says that i spend more on the animals than i do on her and her brother so now she is demanding a net book. i told her tortoises are way more fun than a net book. she said how they just...
