Perfect, yes I was thinking that. We sometimes have a hot Christmas Day! We will be getting a fridge. Do yours sometimes go down at different times? I really think our younger one could go on for weeks where the older one seems to be enjoying relaxing. She hasn’t eaten in a week or so, but the...
Great ideas! They both pooped once they were out today so that made me feel like they needed to be out. They both got a good soak too, and I think we’ll leave them out again now that the warmth seems to be back. Good luck keeping him up, it’ll be fun to have him around!
One of ours seems to be slowing down quite a bit while the other is as wild as a tortoise can be. Really appreciate the insight! Would you mind updating when you do end up putting him away if you think of it?
Very good to know! We put them back out today since temps are back up. We’ll keep putting them in for cold nights until they’re ready to be put away for the winter. Appreciate your input!
Thank you! I will read that one a few times, lots of good info. Yes, they are separated. Both are female, one is about 14 and the other 9. What type of refrigerator do you use? We have a refrigerator in the garage that we keep overflow food in, but it has a freezer top which sounds like a bad...
Thank you so much for the reply! I’ve read the refrigerator thread (one of them at least!) and we’re still considering it! I put both tortoises back outside today because the low is up and the high is up. One was roaming all over and enjoying life, the other just went into one of the hides and...
do you notice yours coming out for warm days? We put ours away but it’s going to be so warm this week in Phoenix that I feel like they should come out again!
My last post may have been a bit too specific since I haven’t had any replies...can anyone shine some light on typical day and night temps that signal it’s time for brumation for desert tortoises? We moved our two into the garage when temps went below 50 at night, but bring them back out when it...
Hello!
We are in Scottsdale (Phoenix suburb) and the temps are finally cooling down. The low yesterday was around 45 with a high of 76, and today the high is 70 with a low of 42. We brought both tortoises into the garage Monday night in separate boxes with orchid bark. I took them out again in...
So both of my torts came from others. They are sisters but they are different ages, I guess 7 and 14. Neither has ever lived alone, but this is the first time they have lived together. We got them both on the same day about 2-3 months ago. Hope is the older one and she lived with a male tortoise...
Hmm interesting theories. Yes we have lots and lots of poop, I watched her poop twice yesterday but it was far too wet. I wasn’t sure if that was a side effect of her worm meds or if she’s been getting spoiled too much. I assume the latter and have put a hold on romaine, which she would live on...
We have 2 desert tortoises roaming free in our tortoise proofed backyard. We live in the Phoenix area so it’s been detestably hot. The last week it’s been pretty nice, high temps in low 90s or high 80s and the lows in the high 60s. Our two girls have been hiding for the most part except for...
May I ask what you use to block the entrance? Cinder blocks? Is that to help maintain the temperature since it is more chilly? I think we're still a few months away from this because its still very hot here in the Phoenix area, but I want to be prepared. We have access to some pine needles...
Awesome, thanks!! Since I initially posted this they seem to not be fighting anymore...they are both happily (?) under the aloe. We did build a new “house” in deep shade and they go in it occasionally, but it isn’t their favorite location. We’re going to work on making it their favorite location...
Ok here are the photos!
This one shows the aloe on the far left of the photo and the proposed new site on the right behind the citrus
This is where the original enclosure was, now destroyed. No shade at all!
This is the proposed new site, behind the citrus on the right (or perhaps one behind...
Yes, the aloe is in full sun, but there are two citrus trees next to it that I think could provide enough shade to make a happy spot. I’ll take a photo and see if you agree.
