    UV specific light recommendations

Repti-zoo is hit or miss. I’ve bought most available “UV” bulbs off Amazon and tested them on my solarmeter 6.5 and some have good reading but most are junk. Repti-Zoo have been about 50/50.

Two male Russian tortoises need a new home

I have a Facebook page, but my website isn’t finished yet. Hoosier Turtles and Tortoises on Facebook. I can send you a shipping label and run through how to ship them. It’s not nearly as difficult as I first thought years ago and they’re even better at shipping reptiles now days. I’ll send you a...

Looking to rehome my Female Russian Tortoise (Northern Virginia)

I run a sanctuary and breeding facility specializing in Russians. I don’t sell any of the hatchlings, I donate(Through the TTPG) them in temp sexed groups of pure subspecies(there are 5) across the US to ensure pure species remain. I’d love to chat, if you’re interested.

Two male Russian tortoises need a new home

I am in Indianapolis and run a Sanctuary. I specialize in Horsfieldi(Russians) and would love to offer them a permanent home where they’ll have large outdoor enclosures and a natural diet.

    Looking to rehome

Seems odd he started his account at 8:40, posted that reply at 8:43 and hasn’t been back on since… When people do that it tells me they’re not too serious about keeping tortoises. My $0.02

    ... and cr*p we are a rehab/rescue somehow

If your DNR is like mine here in Indiana, they’ll hopefully take your recommendation when determining if it can be released. I run a rescue/sanctuary and get lots of confiscation turtles through the DNR. We try to release all that as can(lord knows I don’t need any more) but sometimes it’s not...

Are my Russians two different subspecies?

Once I have all my slides done and the data is all put together, I will absolutely share here! I would love to see more people grouping them correctly as it’s shown to help with fertility. Many only have one subspecies just by chance. Most of the ones imported have been three subspecies and...

Are my Russians two different subspecies?

I’m actually going to be speaking this year at TTPG about Russian tortoises and all 6 subspecies. There are actually 5 valid and 1 extinct subspecies. Sadly, the information EgyptianDan had posted isn’t completely correct and leaves information. A certain website about Russians also has many...

The Best Way To Raise Any Temperate Species Of Tortoise

I’m dropping out of all tortoise Facebook groups. Noelia is a Nazi. Removed my link to this trying to help a lady with surprise hatchlings. Ugh

    Soaking

Tbh, they usually don’t mind at all and will begin to eat and eat and eat now that it is much easier to do.

    Soaking

I use a glass to tape them onto so they can’t get off and I have two free hands to work with. I hold their head out with one hand and dremmel the with the other.

    Soaking

I always put a rock or stone in the dish so they have something to claw onto if they flip. A slightly smaller clay saucer inside these deeper dishes also works. But I’m home with mine 24/7 so that helps too.

    Soaking

$90 for a beak trim??? Holy cow I should start offering it for $50 and make a killing! Jk! I do it for free when people local contact me. I can run you through how to do it if you have a dremmel tool?

    Soaking vs watering?

I don’t pull any of my adult Russians or Hermanns tortoises out to soak unless they’re sick. I do run a sprinkler and at the same time I have a hose I let run and make pools in their enclosures. They come out and drink up as I have seen Russians do in the wild(much like box turtles do during...

    TORTOISE HERPES?!?!?!?!?!? Help? Advice?

I have dealt with HV several times and it is why I quarantine for a full year now. I also have all my Russian tortoises tested when they come in. First thing to do is isolate the sick in small enclosures. I have enough outdoors that I just give them a 2’x4’ or 4’x4’. Make sure it gets plenty...

    Poorly Russian (again)

I’m glad you came here for some help. Please don’t take offense to answers or questions anyone has said or asked. They’re just trying to get a full picture of what is going on. As for the substrate, I don’t buy into the whole NO SAND thing. I use it in almost every enclosure I have any I’ve...
