My 14 yo son wants an aldabra

Hi, nice to read your story ! I felt a lot of empathy when you talked about getting the actual breed of animal from the get go. I always wanted a dog as a child and my parents wouldn’t allow it. As soon as I had a large house and large garden I decided that I wanted an Irish wolfhound. So many...

Northumberland Sulcata laying eggs … advice please….

Hi Lyn, many thanks for your response…. She’s been with my Sulcata male for about 6 months but I’ve never seen any “ interest’” However she was kept with another male for several years before I bought her and transferred her up to Northumberland where I live. From research ( only via Google) it...

Northumberland Sulcata laying eggs … advice please….

Hi, living in the north of England … my Sulcata laid some eggs today and I’m asking for a bit of guidance as to what to do. Should I dig them up and carefully attempt to incubate them ? I have all the gear but doubt that they will be fertile . It’s chilly here and although she buried them I feel...

    No power in the UK

Many thanks to all of you kind members who responded….. some with very innovative ideas too. We managed to get our power reconnected after 10 days. It was tough though. All torts now happy and resettled into their enclosures. We have now invested in a 25kw generator for any future power outages...

    No power in the UK

Hi, I’m from the north east of England and we’ve had a power outage from storm Arwen for a week now. Currently in my kitchen, in front of the wood burner I have 2 Aldabras, 5 Sulcatas, and two Herman’s . I also have two very large Sulcatas in a shed outside which I’ve managed to warm with a gas...

How to hold my Russian tortoise?

Lovely name for your Russian ! I move my tortoises around in supermarket “bags for life” .... they have quite a distance between their enclosure and the the place I soak them in my kitchen. It’s all essentially about being gentle and aware that they get stressed when over handled. Fantastic to...

This is fantastic.... I’m a bit of a “stalker” and research loads of very good info on here but am often reluctant to post as I sometimes find that negative responses affect people who may still be learning and want to do the very best for their torts but don’t want to be hammered in a critical...

    Edible flowers - safe?

Hi, welcome to both you and Lionel ! I’m in the UK too so totally understand your issues at this period of the year when we trade off wild grown greens, supermarket food and dried supplements . It won’t be too long before the healthy greens start sprouting in the garden but it’s quits a...

    Centile charts

Hi there guys..... fairly new to this forum but as someone who is trying to be the best tort mum I’m wondering if there is any sort of centile growth chart for tortoises .? I’ve looked ... but doesn’t seem there is anything out there. I’d find it very helpful just to track the growth...

I want a tortoise but it seems too difficult

Hi Gillsims,.... I live in the north of the UK and want to warmly welcome you to the forum. In my opinion you are already trying to learn about the fantastic life as a tortoise parent, so don’t be discouraged by comments that you possibly believe to be negative. As a recent new owner I read a...

    Tortoise worm count

Great advice on worming.... I too wanted to make sure husbandry, including worming was correct..... called my vets yesterday for advice on submitting a stool sample for each of my 6 torts to check for parasites and worms and was told it would be £110 per tort. I can’t justify £660 when all of...
