Sulcata staying in his cave all day

Hi Laura! thanks so much. This is making more sense - it has been in the low 70s here, after a heat wave, so everything (and all the advice) is pointing to him not being warm enough. I love the radiant heater behind the cinder blocks idea - and the phone app - OMG!!!! that;s great! I need...

Sulcata staying in his cave all day

ALSO, i CHECKED THE MAT AND IT SAYS THE TEMP doesn't go below 85 or higher than 118. I will get a reptile thermometer in there and get an accurate reading for the enclosure. He does eat, he just hasn't voluntarily left his cave to climb out and forage for the last week. Sounds like I need...

Ok. What do I use to keep the enclosure warmer at night that isn’t going to burn his shell?

Sulcata staying in his cave all day

I forgot to attach these photos to my original reply. Here is his reptile heater, his enclosure, a close-up of his night cave which I had to Jerry rig using plywood and cinderblocks because he outgrew the biggest one I could find at the pet store and there he is underneath his shady spot in his...

Sulcata staying in his cave all day

Hi Tom He has the ReptiTherm extra large 18x18 reptile heating mat in his cave. The box says it heats at 85 degrees which is minimum /good for nighttime temperature i think/hope. His other heat source is the sun during the day and his enclosure gets sun all day long with a couple of shady spots...

Sulcata staying in his cave all day

HI everyone. Django is an 8-year-old male Sulcata that I adopted as a surrender from a reptile rescue 2 years ago. So far, he has tripled in size and although his shell still shows the early pyramiding that he had when he first came home, his shell growth since then is flat. The past week, he...

    7 year old Sulcata?

The first photo is Django one year apart. The second is him in his old cave that he outgrew, the third is him in his new cave that I built for him. Plan to build much larger enclosure for him in Spring. He grazes on grass, that greens are supplemental to that at this point.

    7 year old Sulcata?

Hi. I rescued a 6-year-old Sulcata and have had him a year. In the year, he has doubled in size, from 6 inches across to over 12 inches. My concern is that I read a post recently that said a 7 year old Sulcata should be 40-50 pounds, and he is nowhere near that. Could he be younger than they...

Great. I just spent an hour trying to post something and it disappeared. I cannot figure out how to post a photo either. can someone help with this? I kept getting a message that I couldn't post anything over 420 characters but I see other posts that are way longer than what I was trying to...

Don't do what I did yesterday. I almost lost my Cholla.

Been there. My Sulcata Django was able to squeeze out under a gate that was much lower than his shell height, and walk across the street into a neighbor's yard before they found him the next afternoon. Same - searching until late at night with a flashlight etc. Talk about a sickening...
