    Soft shell turtle

I work at a pet store and somebody abandoned a soft shell turtle there. We can't sell it, but we need to find a good home for it. If you live within driving distance of Chicago and are willing to come to Chicago to pick it up, and you can prove that you know about large aquatic turtles and can...

    Gatorade

I've used pedialite before. I'd think pedialite would be better than gatorade since it's milder.

i think i got peed on....

My ball python uses me as a toilet at least once a month (the last time made a really big mess, liquid urine everywhere). Orrin hasn't gone on me yet :-)

6" male redfoot Petsmart Phx. AZ

That's the much bigger problem. They won't consider it an outdoor animal at all. They'll sell it to somebody telling them that it needs a 40 gallon aquarium, but when the buyer insists that they can only afford a 20 they'll tell them that's alright for now, but he really needs the 40 within a...

6" male redfoot Petsmart Phx. AZ

Woah!! Two years? That's insane. At the Petsmart where I (unfortunately) work we carry russians and they are rarely there for more than a month and are usually bought within two weeks of arriving. It's so awful for a tortoise to be living in a pet store for that long. I hate to think about...

    GuZoo Tortoise SEIZED!

!!!!! I am literally in tears over that enclosure. I hope you succeed in keeping that tortoise from ever going back there and saving the other animals.

    First Pet

An eastern hognose snake :-) I was only four, but he was my snake. The only thing I asked for for Christmas was a pet snake. That's all I wanted for months. I was only four, so I didn't take care of him all on my own, but I helped with all of his care and I was the only one to handle him...

    Abused tortoises in the news

http://www.app.com/article/20110913/NJNEWS/309130092/Huge-tortoises-seized-from-Highlands-home-taken-zoo-Lacey This article seems to do a bit of a better job explaining the situation. I think they were most likely rightfully seized with cause. It doesn't seem like a good situation--their plan...

    Dream Species

Girlfriends for Lonesome George and Tony :( For myself, a leopard or, if they exist, a tortoise that grows to about 12-15 inches :shy:

    only eats live plants!

So Orrin has basically decided that he will only eat live plants. Since it's almost winter and I live in an apartment it's not exactly possible to let him free graze outside. He went a week eating almost nothing--I noticed some tiny nibbles once or twice, but nothing I would call a meal...

    hermit crabs

The crabs would definitely eat an egg, and cypress is no good for them. If you used the coconut coir/sand mix it could work, but would still not be ideal. If you have a tortoise that doesn't eat bugs and want to introduce something to eat the poop and spilled food, you could use springtails or...

    hermit crabs

I keep hermit crabs too, but they are separate from my tortoise. An environment that is ideal for a tortoise will not be good for hermit crabs and vice versa. Hermit crabs do best when kept on moist sand--like you would use to build a sandcastle. They need to be able to dig firm burroughs in...

    Whats your occupation

I currently work at a Petsmart. With a degree in art history and almost no work experience that's just about the only place that would hire me :-/

    Baby turtles/Tortoises less than 4"

I do see a huge problem with people selling turtles and tortoises under 4 inches--reputable breeders to hobbyists, fine, but not in stores. Why? Because people see these tiny little turtles sold for a couple of bucks and assume that they'll never grow, and most of the people who sell them that...

    fruit

So how bad is fruit realistically? I had to move my russian to a different apartment for a little while (spraying for bugs at home). This other place is much louder and brighter than what he's used to, so he hasn't eaten for a few days--I know, nothing to panic over, but it's still not good...

    Favorite Foods

Mine's not a big eater yet. . .well, not usually. I put in two live coleus plants thinking that he'd just nibble on those whenever hungry after eating his normal mix. Wow was I wrong. He ate both plants, all in less than a day. Go over to thetortoisetable.org.uk and find a live plant that's...

    Adult?

Thanks! Since he's a rescue who only had access to rotten food for who knows how long I'm also a bit worried that he might be very underweight. He's currently exactly 500 grams at 5.5in (140mm). Is that dangerously small? Is there something specific I can feed him to help get him to a healthy...

    Adult?

When is a russian tortoise considered an adult? Orrin was most likely wild caught a little over a year ago, spent a few weeks in a petsmart, then spent a year with an extremely neglectful family before coming to me about a week ago. He is 5.5 inches long (I'll have weight and pics later...

I'll be there on Sunday getting a crested gecko :-)

    Tortoises and cats?

Oh, I don't let him just roam freely about the place. I just mean to let him out for about an hour a day to run around (with careful supervision) since it's probably going to be too cold to let him run outside.
