Outdoor Accommodation in a Colder (UK) Climate

I appreciate your liking my recent post and wanted to ask for your advice, if I may. I sense my 2 Greek torts living outside could be exhibitinge quasi hibernation behavior. My male, Scooby, is now burrowed in the dirt and just seems to have stopped eating (as of yesterday). My female Sheldane...

Outdoor Accommodation in a Colder (UK) Climate

Thank you for this thread. We have two Greeks that we just moved outside this past June. We live in Oakland, CA. They really thrived since moving and summer was wonderful for them. Now that it’s cooler I’ve ordered two custom tortoise houses with built in heat lamps. I’ve been eagerly waiting...

Advice on outdoor warming of adult Greek tortoises

Just following up on this. Any tips on keeping Greek tortoises outdoors in the cooler months? I’m hoping our new tortoise houses with built in heat lamps arrive by mid-December. But for now they just have unheated shelters. The weather ranges from low 40s at night to low 60s during the day. They...

Advice on outdoor warming of adult Greek tortoises

We moved our 2 adult Greek tortoises to large outside enclosures over the summer. They have thrived in the new spaces. I live in Oakland, CA so we don’t get extreme cold but our nights are getting cool now and we’ve gotten as low as 38 degrees F. I moved them into un-heated indoor enclosures...

Worried about our new Greek hatchling (first time w/hatchling)

Thanks so much! Activity seems good. Eyes are open. He walks around his enclosure in between his many naps. When we put him in sunlight, we always notice an uptick in activity. Humidity is 50-60% and basking temp is 85-95 with cooler area of low to mid 70s. I really appreciate your reply!!

Worried about our new Greek hatchling (first time w/hatchling)

Hello all, We took your advice and created a brooder tank with moistened paper towels on the bottom. We’ve followed all the advice on lights, humidity and temperature. We still can’t get our little “Gerry” to eat. I’ve tried to regularly offer a mix of bits of greens, dandelion, clover, grass...

Worried about our new Greek hatchling (first time w/hatchling)

Thank you Karen and Hamiltondude. We have a pretty steady temperature in our enclosure - 85-95 basking area, 75 cooler area, and our little guy is moving around a lot more, plus we are taking the enclosure out in the sun now for 15-20 min per day. We have a humidifier going regularly and are...

Just hatched our first baby Greek - very new to hatchlings

Thank you. We did put him into a newly set up enclosure but I can create a brooder box instead. The picture you sent, Mark, is helpful. It sounds like the main thing we need to change is instead of substrate, to have wet paper towels and edible leaves. Since we don’t have an incubator, we do...

Worried about our new Greek hatchling (first time w/hatchling)

Hello, We are new to having a hatchling and so nervous we could be doing things wrong. Our tiny Golden Greek just hatched yesterday and it’s been a bit over 24 hours but he’s (we think it’s a male) not moving much and won’t eat. He’ll walk a tiny bit, so I know he’s able to. He seemed more...

Golden Greek Hatchling Soft Shell HELP!

I saw your post and was hoping to get tips for our just hatched Golden Greek. He just hatched yesterday and it’s been a bit over 24 hours but he’s not moving much and won’t eat. He seemed more energetic right after hatching from the egg than now. We have a ceramic heat lamp on, variable...

Just hatched our first baby Greek - very new to hatchlings

Another question - is it normal if the new hatchling doesn’t eat on the first day? It’s sleeping a fair amount, though exploring its new habitat too.
