Thank you, it sure is unique, this is his vivarium in which he sleeps, he has a large area outside of this in which he walks around inside, even though they are much more docile during the winter months and prefer snoozing than walking, as soon as summer comes though he's outside and it's a...
Hi all, I'm looking for some advice, I have a 5 year old leopard tortoise who is coming close to outgrowing his current viv.
I am planning on building a vivarium incorporating my stairs, my plan was to use the underside of the stairs as his dark/bed area then making it into a 'L' shape, one...
Yes CHEs on a thermostat, think I need to invest in a UV meter, was just unsure as the basking light (Reflector/mercury) I've removed states it provides UVB and I've changed it to an incandescent type lamp now, the tortoise isn't lacking anything due to the change is it?? Thanks
I have a closed chamber with a 3ft UV strip light attached to top with 2 CHE's either end to provide ambient heat and sufficient heat for humid hide.
I had a reflector type spotlight fitted at the Warmer side but having read on here that the carapace can be damaged due to heat I have decided to...
@ReiGuy Thanks very much for all the info I am using orchid bark as a substrate and finding it very good for holding humidity.
I was just under the impression that this high a humidity was only essential for hatchlings and could ease off with humidity levels throughout chamber, maybe only...
Any advice on humidity levels for a 3 year old leopard tortoise, have maintained humidity around the 65-70% range in closed chamber and humid hide and sprayed carapace twice a day.
My question is do I continue like this or do I lower the levels and amount I spray at this age?
Cheers
That's great, thanks for that, he will be living in a closed chamber in my house but want to give him exposure to natural UV and food when safe for him to do so, I will take your advice and take him out when the summer hits (Hopefully) Thanks again ??
Hi all I am new to keeping a tortoise, I have a 3 year old leopard tortoise which I've had for about 3 months, my question is, what sort of outside temperature is acceptable for the little fella to be able to go into his outside enclosure, I'm living in UK. Thanks in advance
Ok, but having them both off one stat, wouldn't that turn off the humid hide end CHE once hot end gets upto temperature? Also wouldn't have a hot and cooler end as such then would I?
Ok, that's great and thanks for your sound advice, like you said getting a RHP is a nightmare, especially living in UK, I will put an additional CHE in over humid hide. Thanks again
Ok, thanks for that, so moving the CHE to the otherside and maybe upgrading basking lamp to 100w can't be done? leaving just the basking light at one end? CHE would heat through the night then also?
Hi, I'm looking for advice on my humid hide temperature for my 3 year old leopard, I can't seem to raise the temperature high enough in it, it's currently at 73f with hot end at 88f I'm using fine orchid bark with basking light and CHE both at the hot end, for day and night heating.
Should I...
Ok, thanks both for your useful information, I'm new to keeping a tortoise and enjoying the whole thing, I want what's best for him so will take moss out and replace my substrate, always great advice here ??
Thanks for the reply, will change my substrate and get it damp like you advised, I have moss in my humid hide but sometimes I find it gets mouldy, is it just a case of changing it regularly or is it too damp? Cheers
Sorry for another humidity question, I'm struggling maintaining high humidity for my leopard tortoise, I spray and water regularly but drops soon after, I have got moss in the closed chamber with beech wood chips, my temps are 32 degrees Celsius hot, 30 cool side day and 27 at night, any ideas...
Hi Tom, Thanks for that, as I'm in the UK I'm unable to get hold of a RHP so will have to settle for a CHE which will be thermostatically controlled, he lives in a closed chamber in house, it's more for peace of mind incase temp drops below recommended in your care guide.
One other question if...
