I think it's a prickly pear. Even thought there are no stickers on it. they just bite right into it with their little garden-shear beaks. they grow very well here, just break off a leaf and stick it in the ground and it will grow.
The whole permit thing is undergoing changes lately due to all the construction and habitat destruction in FL. I think things are becoming a little more relaxed when it comes to moving these guys out of harms way. I have no exact answer as to what would happen. They could either determine the...
The lid is a plastic tool tray. Holes are drilled in the bottom to let water drain through. The tray had a perfect lip around the edge so the opening is just smaller than the lip. That's what keeps it from falling all the way through.

Meet Sabio, also male, the first Gopher our neighbor brought over without warning.

Hello everyone.
Here are some pictures of the concrete cave we originally made for the red foots. When our neighbor dropped off a gopher tortoise without warning, we made the Red Foot Courtyard. The Gophers took over this area...
Here is the wood frame with insulated foam board. It is...
Thanks everyone! They deserve the best I can provide for them. I'll never forget the way that first little guy seemed so inquisitive in the tiny tank at the reptile shop. I thought... just wait little buddy.
I have no kids so I can spoil the critters.
I'm sure they would love the company...
Yes... both male. When I got them, I asked for a male and female. The reptile shop didn't really know. They are both developing concaved plastrons at around 4 years.
Before I opened up this end of the tiki and expanded their territory, they would pace and get in each other's way. I first...
My red foots used to tip each other over before I doubled their space. Usually on the flat surface inside the tiki hut. Like Jacqui mentioned, they can right themselves easily unless they are on a flat surface. Now they each have their own little spots they like to hide in and rarely come into...
I'm in the remodeling business and able to recycle building materials. All the landscape is constantly reproducing and being transplanted in new locations.
The most expensive things were the pond liner (about $100.00) and the Lexan (about $50.00). I spent around $250.00 total on this one...
Here are some construction pics of Bob and Dot's enclosure in the front court yard of my house.
My uncle Scott, the landscape artist and fellow tort-lover.
With the GFI electrical receptacles in place, we now position the rubber pond-liner for the stream.
Now to fill up the liner...
Thanks about the yard and the welcome. This is a cool forum and even cooler people I must say!
I'm in Winter Haven, FL. Center of the state. The rain shower almost every afternoon in the summer makes for nice jungle action. I'll post more photos of the other enclosures around the rest of the...
Yes. They eat the fallen fruit off the jungle floor in their natural habitat. They like to eat the snails after it rains (it sounds like crunching potato chips.) I feed them mostly collards, yellow squash, red hibiscus flowers from my yard, some of the vines that grow here, and cactus...
I have a couple of red-foots and here they are...
Bob and Dot.
You can see the live action (or lack thereof) on my tortoise cam...
