Thank you @Tom and @wellington. I suppose I'll try out the camera without any additional lights and see how clear the image is. It might just be that the Yi cameras are not as good with their night vision compared to the Blink cams. But I rather stick with that brand since all my other cameras...
Curious why you need the mats if you are able to keep the Ambient temps 85-90 with an oil filled radiator? Are the mats themselves helping you reach those temps?
I believe it does, but do you think that will be enough? I always assumed the IR was suitable for low light applications, such as hanging a camera outside at night, but we are talking about a totally enclosed box here. Total darkness. Not sure how good the image will be in my situation.
I'm looking to spy on my tortoises at night so I'll be installing a camera inside their shed (Yi camera).
Since the shed is well sealed and insulated I doubt my cam will be able to capture much in the total pitch darkness.
The camera does have "night vision" so I'm sure that even a faint...
Thanks Tom, can't thank you enough. I'm still a bit confused about the redundancy of connecting the heater to my digital temp controller when it also comes with its own built in thermostat.
How do you figure out how high to crank the heater unit? If my digital controller fails for whatever...
Hi there @Tom what is your opinion on the radiator size for an insulated 8' x 4' x 3' outdoor shed (see picture below). Winter temps here in South Florida can range in the 32-60F.
The shed will have its own dedicated circuit/breaker. I already own a Zilla Digital Temperature Controller...
Dude I have a wife about to give birth in about a week and a half. Her OCD is off the charts sanitizing every corner of the house. If she were to find a giant frog in the freezer I'll probably end up sleeping outside with the tortoises 😅
Trash pick up is on Monday. I'm sure Mr. invasive toad...
I'll just play it safe and start locking up the tortoises up at night like I used to do in the winter time. The night-box is sealed enough to prevent anything other than ants from coming in.
It's a bit extra work but on a positive light it will force me to handle them daily when I take them in...
I don't know much about toads but based on the pic you linked it seems to be the Invasive Cane Toad (no crests). I went ahead and yeeted it into the trash bin where it can't get out. I'm too much of a softie to kill it and don't want to rub it with ointments and then put it on my fridge either...
@Tom given how many mice I saw when I set up the trail camera I was pleasantly surprised when I saw cats were starting to come around. As far as "dealing" with them I'm not sure... I definitely wouldn't want to hurt them. Also, I don't think they are defecating on the tortoise pen given there...
Sounds about right. I use to lock them in a night box every night during the winter season and also because they were smaller then, but I suppose there is no harm in keeping that up at least until they get too heavy.
There is also a huge toad that likes to hang out in the outdoor pen due to...
Yup I'm going to trim the tree a bit and rake any leaves that fall around the pond.
Most importantly, I need to figure out some sort of shade loving groundcover that I can plant around the pond area. Whenever the water overflows it allows mud to "river" itself inside the pond. Grass doesn't...
Yup the drainage pipe would have definitely been a great help. I suppose to clean it I'll first try to empty out as much as I can with a big bowl and then use a push broom to clean out the remaining water/scum. Maybe in the future I can come up with a better system to drain... Thank you a...
Ok so I built up a bigger pond for the tortoises in a spot with more shade. I don't expect that they'll use it on their own anytime soon so I've been manually placing them on the shallow part myself to help them get acquainted with it. A couple of the tortoises will actually chill right where I...
Well I tried my best to copy your master creation. Made a pond that's 8 inches deep at the center and the slope is gradual enough that all six of the young tortoises are able to easily get out (I "manually inserted" each one in the pond to make sure they could).
I still have to chisel out all...
Yup, I do the super salad mix once a week. Throw in a hint of calcium supplement every other week with it. The rest of the time they munch on grass and weeds. I would feed them more often the first six months and slowly started encouraging them to depend more on turf.
I turn on a sprinkler...
