Thanks, all! This gives me good options to try. I have been piecing together a new much bigger indoor enclosure (from a rubber tub to approx 27 sq ft) and am excited to finally start filling it and getting closer to moving the little guy in.
Thanks ascott. I will look into peat moss. I figured the dyes or bleaches would be a problem and the mulch is expensive in large quantities at pet stores. Does peat moss hold humidity as well as the mulch?
Hi all -
I have recently built and now am trying to fill a larger indoor enclosure for my RF tort. I remember reading that folks have found cypress mulch in bulk at big box stores like Home Depot or Lowe for a good price, but when I go look all I find is colored mulch. Is that safe for the...
There is a thread within this Enclosures forum titled "Ideas!?" that gives some good info on where to get plants. In short the more experienced than I am people say most places get plants from the same suppliers so where to buy doesn't make a difference unless you have an organic nursery near...
Thanks for the idea on the bookshelf. I am trying to figure out the start of a new enclosure. Today was a 20% off sale at Big Lots so I grabbed a couple shelves to work with as a start.
My question for you is are you using the back that comes with the shelf as the floor of your enclosure or...
We have only had our tort for 2 months and tortoise mania is hitting the kids at my house! They came home from a visit with grandpa last week with a tortoise trinket they had purchased FOR the tort. It is our first of what I'm sure will be many.
But we do already have quite a few school...
Frightening! Hate to think of having someone take a pet. Seems so cruel. I hadn't thought of that as a danger before.
Thanks for the heads up! I will have to start being more protective.
Hi -
My sister and her family lived in Costa Rica for a year. While they were there, a social little tortoise showed up in their back yard and became their pet in a way. It pretty much set up camp in the yard. My sis & her hubby even set up a little water dish and looked out for it. Pretty...
Good to know! I'm in NE - not too far away. I am fairly sure he/she is good & healthy. Eats well, is active & eyes/nose look clear. I just want a baseline check to be sure I am starting out caring for him/her right.
Gonna be a great day to get the lil ones out for some real sun! Have a great...
Thanks for looking into some vet references. I am anxious to be sure I am getting his/her care right.
I do have a calcium bone (cottle bone? Cuttle bone? Brain fart!!) in his enclosure but I've never seen him use it.

Thank you. I think he's very nice too and he seems healthy but I...
Took my little guy to get a first check-up at one of the vets listed in the vets section but while he knew basic reptile info he didn't seem knowledgable about RF's specifically.
First he gave me a pamphlet on a dessert tort and told me they are all the same. Then he gave me advice that...
Great idea. I will try that if I can't find a small enough one with a 12 hr run time.
Can you post some photos of how the PVC pipes are connected to the humidifier and then into the enclosure?

I can get it up to 70 by pouring in water but it doesn't stay up that high for more than half...
Hi all-
I need to add a humidifier to my RF enclosure which is, for now, a 45 gal tub. I already have a shelf across the tub to sit the lights on and I'd like to find something that would fit on this shelf under the plexiglass lid. All the humidifiers I have seen are much too big. The tub...
Hello Portland, Oregon Red Foot Mommas & Poppas:
My new RF joined the household about a month ago. After a couple weeks (once he was settled) I checked the vet posting on the forum here to get a reference for a vet and took my little guy in for a general new-pet exam. The appointment started...
Does the water fall on the hot side help with keeping humidity up at all? Did you notice a difference when you added it?
I recently looked at one and considered getting it but put it off for now. I really like it in your enclosure. I may have to find a way to fit one in!
I will keep that in mind in the future if/when I decide to add on. I am getting a little ahead of myself but I am really looking forward to learning more, gaining confidence and being able to house a herd! :-)
