Keeping Indian Star & Leo *separately* in same room?

I have a great opportunity to adopt a small Indian Star tortoise who needs a home. Upon further research I find that they are particularly susceptible to pathogens other torts carry. I currently house a Leopard tort. Now they would have separate enclosures both inside and outside. They would...

Keeping Leopard & Indian Star *separately*

I have an great opportunity to adopt a small Indian Star tortoise. I currently have a Leopard tortoise. Upon further research I’m finding that Stars are very susceptible to pathogens from other tortoises. Both torts are CB and healthy. I’ve owned the Leo for 8 years and the Star is 3. These two...

    Adult eastern box turtle

Is there anyone in the western Massachusetts area who would like to adopt my adult eastern box turtle? I’m moving and no longer have an outdoor space for her which is where I kept her all summer. It’s not fair to her so I’m looking for someone to take her but you’d have to have an outdoor space...

It's been 3 years since I adopted my leopard tortoise

And look how big he's gotten! I received him August 2012 and his previous owner said he purchased him as a hatchling in April 2011. So I say he's 4.5 years old. He weighed 276g and was 5" scl. He came with a bit of pyramiding which makes sense after I asked how he was cared for. (dry, dry, dry)...

Outdoor underground night box for EBT

I'd like to keep my eastern box turtle outside 24/7 this summer. I live in Massachusetts so it's perfect weather for her. I have an escape proof enclosure but I'd like to make a wooden den box that i can bury and fill with leaf litter for her to hide and sleep in. I believe some people use this...

    Thermostat?

I need a thermostat for my reptiles. Are the helix ones on lllreptile really the only ones? 135$?!? That's ridiculous. Are there cheaper options? I don't like the rheostat and I would prefer a digital read out.

New enclosures for leopard & ebt

So i decided to switch my torts enclosures. The ebt was on top and the leo on the bottom. I downsized the bottom so i had to switch them. Plus heat rises so the top is always warmer. I took all the dirt out and changed the plastic lining. The top is 7'l-3'w-18'h. I threw out the old dirt and...

Getting tort to poop for sample

My tortoise doesn't poop too often..... Maybe once or twice a week. Although i feel he may eat some >.< it's always healthy poop. I just feel like with my luck he will poop a week before the vet visit and not again by the time i need it. Any tricks to get him to poop on command?

    Found small snapping turtle!

It's been on the 40s for a month and on a random warm day, i find this small snapping turtle no where near water. I just want to know if it's too late to put him in a pond for the winter?

    Uvb question

I might be making this up but i believe i read online somewhere that if your tortoise can get real sunlight for more than half the year that they don't need a artificial source of uvb. I'm just wondering this. I have a ebt that doesn't hibernate but RARELY unburies herself over the winter and i...

    Restless ebt

I've had Opi a year now. I live in Massachusetts so she lives outside from March-October in a secure 4-7 enclosure if the weather permits it. Her previous owner did not hibernate her and I'm not familiar with the process so I've chosen not not hibernate her either. It goes without saying that...

Styrofoam insulation sheets for closed chamber?

So my 3 year old leopard tortoise has a pretty large indoor enclosure (the biggest i can provide) but it has no top. Now that winter's coming i want to cut down on the electric bill. I'm just wondering if anyone has experience with using Styrofoam sheets as part of an enclosure. I already have...

Question about buying a tortoise from a reptile show

I'm going to the new England reptile expo in new Hampshire October 12 and I'd like to buy a hatchling Russian tortoise. I know what to look for in a healthy tortoise: alertness, clear breathing, active, ect. And what to ask: hatch date, husbandry. Are there any other things i should look for or...

    Hatching Russian tortoise

I really want to raise a tortoise from a baby. All the torts i have or have had have been rescues. I've had Russians before and honestly, they are my favorite. I'd really like a Sulcata hatchling but i can't be sure when I'll have space for one once it's large and I'd rather rescue a giant one...

New outdoor enclosure, wondering if she can stand the night

I recently made my snake eastern box turtle a larger outdoor enclosure and since i live in Massachusetts I'd like to leave her outside for the summer. Today has been 70° with some rain and the forecast for tonight is 50s but dropping to 43° in the early morning hours (3am-5am) The enclosure gets...
